Position Type: Non-Interim Dates: 07/27/2027 – 05/27/2027 The job of Teacher – Special Education is to support the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing students with special needs success in academics, interpersonal skills and/or activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, professional staff and administrators to address instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress. This position reports to Site Administrator. Essential Functions Administers developmental testing programs and subject‑specific assessments to assess student competency levels and to develop individual learning plans. Administers, under supervision, first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering) to provide appropriate care. Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, communicating expectations and strategies for improvement. Assesses student progress toward objectives, expectations, and goals (behavioral, motor development, communication skills, academic needs, vocational abilities). Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve overall student outcomes. Counsels students to improve performance, health status, problem‑solving techniques, and personal issues. Demonstrates pedagogical approaches that engage learners and address individual student requirements. Differentiates classroom work to provide instructional materials that match individualized learning programs. Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, paraprofessionals, volunteers and/or student workers to provide an effective classroom program. Instructs students to improve success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study. Maintains confidential and non‑confidential manual and electronic records in accordance with administrative guidelines. Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment. Monitors students in various educational environments (classroom, playground, field trips, nap times) to maintain safety. Orders supplies and equipment to ensure availability. Participates in meetings (e.g., IEPs, staff) to convey and gather information. Participates on PLC team to review data and instructional practices. Prepares written materials (attendance, anecdotal records, IEPs) to document progress and meet requirements. Reports health and safety issues to the assigned administrator and appropriate agencies. Responds to emergency situations to resolve safety concerns and direct personnel as needed. Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, administrators and other sources to resolve issues and provide information. Serves as case manager for special education students, managing IEPs per guidelines. Supports classroom teachers, assisting in implementing established curriculum and individual student plans. Other Functions Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS: Ability to perform complex technical tasks, apply assessment instruments, operate standard office equipment, use pertinent software, prepare and maintain accurate records. KNOWLEDGE: Algebra, geometry, technical information reading, document composition, facilitation of group discussions, analysis of situations, knowledge of codes, policies, regulations, age‑appropriate activities, lesson plan requirements, stages of child development, behavioral management, instructional methods. ABILITY: Scheduling activities, meetings, events, gathering and collating data, working flexibly with diverse individuals, problem‑solving, maintaining confidentiality, exhibiting tact and patience, working flexible hours. Responsibility Responsibilities include working under limited supervision, directing others within a small work unit, and utilizing resources from other units to perform job functions. Work Environment Physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, fine finger dexterity. Generally 10% sitting, 50% walking, 40% standing. Minimal temperature variation with risk of injury and illness. Experience Job‑related experience desired. Education Bachelor’s degree in a job‑related area. Equivalency None specified.
