About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Cardio Thoracic Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Active IL license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS recommended Must-Have: - EKG interpretation skills - Medication titration experience - RN licensure - Basic nursing skills Description: The unit has 70 beds. Patient-nurse ratios are Days 1:4-5 and Nights 1:5-6. Common diagnoses include Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and patients with pacemakers/AICDs. The unit frequently handles lung surgeries, chest tubes, esophagectomies, and general medical overflow. RNs are required to titrate drips including Cardizem and Heparin. Charge nurses are present 24/7 and rarely take patient assignments. A House Supervisor is also available 24/7. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are on the unit with ratios of Days 1:8-9, Evenings 1:9-10, and Nights 1:10-12. RNs are responsible for troubleshooting CPAP and BiPAP equipment for patients using them at home. Heated high flow is only used in special circumstances with COVID patients. Philips monitors are utilized in the telemetry setting, and nurses must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips. Shifts are scheduled for 12 hours from 0700-1930 and 1900-0730. Weekend requirements involve working every other weekend. Holiday rotation includes major holidays throughout the year. RNs may float to other general medical units as necessary. Scrubs of any color are permitted, excluding children or cartoon prints, as the unit serves adult patients. Unit-specific orientation typically lasts for one shift or part of one, depending on previous experience in similar settings.
