This role involves collaborating closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and surgical staff to deliver exceptional patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures.

General Summary

The Surgical First Assistant is a skilled professional who applies sterile techniques and specialized equipment to assist in surgical operations. You will ensure proper setup of cases using surgeon preference cards, maintain aseptic conditions, and anticipate the needs of the surgical team to facilitate smooth procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare surgical cases accurately by referencing surgeon preference cards and utilizing appropriate instruments and prosthetics.
• Apply medical knowledge of anatomy and physiology to support surgical procedures.
• Maintain aseptic technique, demonstrate dexterity, and anticipate surgical team requirements.
• Operate sterilization equipment following established protocols.
• Monitor implantable devices using sterile technique and verify their proper function.
• Inspect and ensure all surgical equipment is functioning correctly prior to procedures.
• Handle surgical tools, tables, cautery units, and specialty equipment with care.
• Assist in positioning patients safely and appropriately under physician guidance.
• Provide optimal visualization of the operative site as directed by the surgeon.
• Support the surgeon in achieving and maintaining hemostasis during surgery.
• Assist with closure of body planes using appropriate techniques.
• Apply wound dressings as ordered by the physician.
• Demonstrate accountability, work independently, adapt to change, and maintain focus under pressure.
• Maintain organized, clean, and efficient workspaces while managing time effectively.
• Perform delegated tasks to uphold quality and enhance patient safety under direct surgeon supervision.

Education

Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program is required.

Experience

Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Nurse is preferred but not mandatory.

Certification and Licenses

• Current Surgical Technologist Certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• First Assistant Certification is preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements

This position requires significant mental focus and physical stamina, including lifting up to 35 pounds, frequent walking, standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions

Expect regular exposure to infectious and communicable diseases through blood and body fluids, as well as occasional encounters with hostile individuals. Physical discomfort is minimal but present.
