Early Career Structural Drafter

WSP is searching for an Early Career Substation Drafter in Billings, MT (locations considered: Boise, ID; Denver, CO; Overland Park, KS). The role involves contributing to the Power Delivery Mountain Civil Structural Substation Team by providing technical design and CADD support under general supervision. Responsibilities Assist in collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, structural concepts, blueprints, schematics, and other sources to support drafting and design activities. Use 3D CADD software to assist with basic design details and prepare drawings requiring a high degree of precision. Provide basic technical design assistance ensuring proper illustration, fit, form, and function with geometric dimensioning, tolerance, and quantity calculations. Verify calculations, design, change orders, interpret contract plans and specifications, and raise any issues or technical problems for resolution. Work with cross‑functional teams in executing project work. Ensure plans adhere to city code, state, and federal regulations. Learn, understand, and implement client’s CAD standards, practices, and procedures. Apply industry standard concrete, rebar, and structural steel detailing practices. Prepare multiple versions of designs for review by engineers. Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements. Collaborate with the engineer‑in‑charge and other technical professionals on project phases, segments, checks, and tasks. Complete training on assigned tasks. Demonstrate basic knowledge of current drafting and design support practices. Communicate effectively in English, both written and oral, to work with team members. Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Required Qualifications High School Diploma. Minimum of 3 years of relevant post‑education experience in drafting and design support. Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques. At least 3 years of drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, with the ability to produce shop drawings. Ability to produce steel and foundation plans, sections, and elevation views. Ability to prepare structural bill of materials. Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements. Excellent research and evaluation skills with an analytical mindset. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with others and presenting ideas to both technical and non‑technical audiences. Self‑leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and comply with company policies. Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives. Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools. Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies. Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek. Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements. Preferred Qualifications Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline. Professional licensure or certification. Experience with Autodesk Inventor and Vault software.
