Course Details Counseling 733-01/SPSY 712-01 Systems Consultation (3 units) Mondays 4:15 PM – 7:00 PM August 30 – December 18, 2026 Course Description This three‑unit graduate counseling course serves as an analysis of organizational systems and organizational development consulting skills. There is an emphasis on the individual and team consultation processes. Students will strengthen methods of initiating and maintaining consultative relationships with and among teachers, staff, and parents to prevent school failure and increase the success of pupils who have physical, social, intellectual, and emotional needs. The course will begin with an overview of consultation and collaboration, including the generic model of consultation and the various stages of the consultative process. Students will examine the school as an organization and the issues and trends that face schools from a psychosocial perspective. As the theoretical and functional foundations are laid, students will develop an understanding of the many roles school counselors and school psychologists take within school‑based settings, and how they can serve as catalysts for systems change and social justice through their facilitation of multi‑tiered systems of support that promote resilience, ameliorate risk, and create a positive learning environment for all students. Finally, students will become familiar with models of counselor intervention, collaboration, and consultation with special emphases on Caplan’s mental health and behavioral models and Lambert’s model of consultee‑centered mental health consultation in school‑based settings. Qualifications Required Qualifications: M.S., M.A., or Ph.D. in School Psychology. Credentialed school psychologist or school counselor in the state of California. Minimum of 3 years experience as a practicing school psychologist or school counselor. Faculty teaching any PPS specialization course must have worked in pre‑K‑12 school settings in the last three years. Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in School Psychology. Successful record of teaching experience at the graduate level. Current license in Marriage & Family Therapy, Professional Clinical Counseling, Educational Psychology, or Psychology and/or National Certification in School Psychology from the National Association of School Psychologists. Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, multicultural/international competence, social justice, clinical expertise, and familiarity with counseling & psychological theory and practice. At least 5 years of school team management experience that includes coordination of care for students with mental health, behavioral, or academic needs. Indicate preferences if there are multiple sections. Include a cover letter that specifically addresses how you meet the qualifications and are prepared to support the mission of the College. Submit a resume. Provide the name and contact information for three professional references. Sign a consent authorizing a broader inquiry which may include reference checks, a motor vehicle check, and a third‑party background check. Salary: $6,480 – $10,308 dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021.
