Assistant United States Attorney (Criminal) Open and Continuous Assistant U.S. Attorneys prosecute a wide variety of federal crimes, including national security breaches, child exploitation, public corruption, transnational organized crime, and violent crime. Investigations and prosecutions involve illegal immigration, trafficking of dangerous drugs and human beings, and enforcement against Cartels and Transnational Criminal Organizations designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs). Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as experience progresses. Security Requirements Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. Residency Requirements Applicants must reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof, per 28 U.S.C. 545. Selective Service Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify registration with the Selective Service System or confirm exemption. Conditions of Employment You must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment requires satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing; continued employment requires a favorable background investigation. You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable. J.D. degree and active membership in any U.S. bar required. You must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Qualifications Applicants must demonstrate superior analytical ability, strong research, writing, and courtroom skills; exercise fair judgment; follow DOJ and United States Attorney’s Office policies; work professionally with staff and law enforcement; handle court matters persuasively and justly; commit to public service and excellence. Required Qualifications Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or relevant experience, and be a U.S. citizen. Proof of active bar membership is required. Education Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree. Salary Information Annual base salary ranges from $65,563.00 to $171,487.00, plus 22.24% locality pay for Raleigh, NC or 17.06% for Wilmington, NC.
