- Provides new patients and minor guardians a hard copy notice of their rights which includes contact information for the Patient Advocate, upon admission. Posts copies of the notice of rights throughout the hospital that is visible for all patients. Provides additional rights information, upon request or when appropriate, to patients, staff, family and the public
- Provides training at new employee orientation and annually to all staff on Recipient Rights.
- Reviews and investigates all complaints concerning potential rights violations to determine whether or not the complaint should be substantiated and recommends remediation options for any violations to the Chief Executive Officer.
- Visits all units regularly to provide rights consultation to patients and staff, review patient records, and to observe rights aspects of treatment and condition on the units.
- Serves as the facility's liaison for the Recipient Rights Advisory Committee.
- Obtains the physician evaluation and certification, along with any other required documents, for involuntary patients. Serves the patient a copy of legal documents, the petition, pick-up order, certificates and the rights booklet and documents the patient response to receiving this information, in the medical record.
- Notifies the Probate Court of patient admissions applicable to their business and completes the Certificate of Service. Distributes all required paperwork to the Probate Court in a timely manner.
- Schedules, prepares and presents the Alternative Treatment Report for the Deferral Meeting. Notifies the Probate Court, physician and applicable staff of the Deferral Meeting outcome and documents it in the patient's medical record.
- Ensures all necessary processes and paperwork related to involuntary commitment is properly completed and followed.
- Provides education to patients regarding the involuntary process.
- Demonstrates clear of understanding of patient rights related to commitment process, as outlined in the Michigan Mental Health Code and Hospital Policy.
- Notifies the Probate Court of the patient's admission and ensures follow through with court processes in a timely manner, according to laws.
- Effectively communicates with patients, treatment teams, courts and lawyers to ensure process is completed timely and properly.
- Audits, monitors, develops, and implements any necessary process improvements related to the involuntary commitment process.
- Ensures that patients who have been admitted through the court process have an opportunity to sign all other relevant admission consents.
- Assists in Hospital-Wide Performance Improvement Functions as necessary.
- Provides assistance to the Assessment & Referral Center as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Experience:
- Prefer Bachelor's or Associates degree in psychology, sociology or social work.
- Will consider related experience in lieu of Bachelor's or Associate's Degree.
- 1-2 years of experience working in a mental health setting highly preferred.
