STEM PhD

STEM PhDs based in the EU and UK apply their domain expertise to design domain-specific prompts, evaluate large language model outputs, and help shape AI research across mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering.

• Develop and refine domain-specific prompts and task instructions for large language models.
• Evaluate and score LLM responses against clear criteria, identifying errors, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
• Translate complex research concepts into structured evaluation tasks and written instructions.
• Conduct independent literature or technical research related to assigned tasks, using AI tools as appropriate.
• Collaborate asynchronously with project teams when required, and document findings clearly for reproducibility.
• Be available for project assignments as they open in your discipline, understanding that placement depends on current project needs.

• Doctoral students or graduates, including those currently enrolled in PhD programs or in postdoctoral positions, in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Engineering.
• Strong written communication skills, able to convert advanced subject-matter knowledge into clear, structured task instructions and evaluation criteria.
• Confidence that your domain expertise exceeds current AI systems in understanding and explaining central concepts in your field.
• Willingness to learn new skills while contributing to AI research across scientific and technical disciplines.

• Status: Independent contractor, not a full-time employee role.
• Location: Fully remote, asynchronous work from anywhere in the EU or UK.
• Schedule and hours: Flexible and asynchronous, with a stated commitment of approximately 10 to 20 hours per week. There is no formal minimum hour requirement, and many contributors report working about 5 to 20 hours per week when assigned to active projects.
• Duration and availability: The program runs year-round, with projects opening periodically across disciplines. Placement into specific projects depends on project availability and current needs.

• Up to $48/hr (depending on the project)

• F-1 students who are eligible for CPT or OPT may be eligible for projects, subject to confirmation with your Designated School Official and your institution''s requirements. If your school requires enrollment in a CPT course, the program may not meet that requirement. STEM OPT is not supported.
