Position Summary

The Ferry Cap & Set Screw Company is seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions. This position will have a strong focus on manufacturing cost accounting, inventory accuracy, operational performance, and financial controls.

The Controller will work closely with company leadership and the operations team to develop reliable product costs, analyze manufacturing performance, improve margins, and provide clear financial information that supports decision making. The ideal candidate understands how activity on the plant floor flows through the financial statements and can translate operating results into actionable business insights.

Key Responsibilities

Manufacturing Cost Accounting

• Own and maintain the company’s standard costing system, including material, labor, overhead, and outside processing costs

• Analyze actual costs compared with standards and investigate material usage, labor efficiency, purchase price, scrap, overhead, and production variances

• Partner with operations and engineering to maintain accurate bills of material, routings, labor standards, machine rates, and overhead allocations

• Calculate and periodically update labor, burden, and machine-hour rates

• Evaluate product, SKU, customer, and job profitability to identify margin improvement opportunities

• Support quoting and pricing decisions by providing accurate cost models and financial analysis

• Monitor work in process and ensure manufacturing costs are properly captured and assigned

• Identify obsolete, slow-moving, excess, and potentially impaired inventory

Inventory and Operational Controls

• Maintain accurate raw material, work in process, and finished goods inventory valuations

• Lead cycle counting and physical inventory processes

• Reconcile inventory records to the general ledger and investigate discrepancies

• Establish strong controls for material movements, production reporting, scrap, rework, and outside processing

• Work with plant leadership to improve the accuracy and timeliness of production and inventory transactions

• Develop reporting for scrap, labor efficiency, machine utilization, inventory turns, and other key manufacturing metrics

Accounting and Financial Reporting

• Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes

• Prepare timely and accurate financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules

• Maintain the general ledger and ensure proper account reconciliations

• Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash reporting, fixed assets, accruals, and intercompany activity

• Prepare budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, and operating plans

• Analyze financial performance against budget, forecast, and prior periods

• Provide leadership with clear explanations of financial results, risks, trends, and opportunities

• Support banking, insurance, tax, audit, and other external reporting requirements

Systems and Process Improvement

• Support the evaluation, implementation, and optimization of the company’s ERP and accounting systems

• Strengthen processes and internal controls across accounting, purchasing, inventory, production, and financial reporting

• Develop standardized reports and dashboards that improve visibility into business performance

• Document accounting procedures and ensure consistent execution

• Identify opportunities to simplify processes, improve data accuracy, and shorten the monthly close

Leadership and Business Partnership

• Serve as a financial partner to company leadership

• Work directly with operations, engineering, purchasing, sales, and customer service

• Build financial understanding and accountability throughout the organization

• Lead, develop, and support the accounting team

• Assist with capital expenditure analysis, including return on investment, payback, and cash flow impact

• Support strategic planning, customer analysis, pricing initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

• Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a manufacturing environment

• Strong experience with manufacturing cost accounting, standard costing, inventory valuation, and variance analysis

• Demonstrated understanding of bills of material, routings, labor standards, overhead allocation, work in process, and production reporting

• Experience leading monthly financial close and preparing financial statements

• Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and internal controls

• Experience with ERP systems; Infor LX experience is preferred

• Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial analysis skills

• Experience supporting an ERP implementation or significant system transition is preferred

• CPA or CMA certification is beneficial but not required
