Senior Tax Accountant – Small Business Advisory

Location: Columbia, Maryland
Work Schedule: Full-time, onsite Monday through Friday
Compensation: $75,000–$95,000 base salary with uncapped earning potential

About the Opportunity

An established and growing accounting firm is seeking a personable, dependable Senior Tax Accountant to manage a portfolio of small-business clients and serve as their trusted accounting and tax advisor.

This is an excellent opportunity for a tax professional who enjoys building client relationships—not simply preparing returns behind the scenes. The successful candidate will review monthly financials, provide proactive tax and business guidance, and prepare individual and business tax returns.

Candidates do not need to arrive as experts in every area of business taxation. The firm offers hands-on training and values communication skills, accountability, sound judgment, and the ability to learn just as highly as technical experience.

What You’ll Do

• Manage the accounting and tax relationship for a portfolio of approximately 40–60 small-business clients
• Serve as the primary point of contact for clients throughout the year
• Review monthly bookkeeping and financial statements prepared by staff accountants
• Identify discrepancies, concerns, and opportunities within client financials
• Conduct proactive tax planning and projections
• Prepare and file individual and small-business tax returns
• Provide practical tax, accounting, and general business guidance
• Coordinate with bookkeepers and other accounting professionals to ensure accurate and timely client work
• Track filing requirements, client deliverables, and tax deadlines across multiple accounts
• Manage your workload independently during tax season
• Build trusted, long-term relationships that support client satisfaction and retention
• Assist with onboarding new clients as capacity allows

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field
• At least one completed tax season in a professional accounting or tax environment
• Experience preparing individual and/or small-business tax returns
• Foundational knowledge of accounting principles and financial statements
• Strong client-facing communication and relationship-building skills
• Ability to organize multiple accounts, deadlines, and competing priorities
• Dependable, self-directed work style with strong follow-through
• Ability and willingness to work onsite daily in Columbia, Maryland

Preferred Qualifications

• Two to six years of public accounting or professional tax experience
• Experience with individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, or small-business returns
• Background working for a small or midsized public accounting firm
• Experience reviewing bookkeeping and monthly financial statements
• Tax-planning, forecasting, or client-advisory experience
• QuickBooks experience
• Enrolled Agent designation or progress toward a professional tax credential

A CPA license is not required.

Compensation and Growth Potential

The anticipated base salary is $75,000–$95,000 , depending on experience, with potential flexibility for an exceptional candidate.

Once established in the role, compensation includes an opportunity to earn based on the revenue generated by the assigned client portfolio. Successful professionals in this model can earn well into six figures as their portfolio and client relationships grow.
