Culinary Specialist / Key Holder

Southern Steer Butcher | Alpharetta, GA

Southern Steer Butcher is looking for an experienced, knowledgeable, and customer-focused Culinary Specialist / Key Holder to join our Alpharetta team.

We’re looking for someone who loves food, understands different cuts of meat, and can confidently help a customer turn an ingredient into a great meal. You should be able to explain how to prepare a cut, suggest a seasoning or marinade, recommend sides, and help customers feel confident about what they’re taking home for dinner.

This role is ideal for someone who combines culinary knowledge, creativity, exceptional customer service, and strong leadership skills. You’ll interact directly with customers, prepare products for our cases, help develop new menu items and meal solutions, and take on key-holder responsibilities within the store.

This is not an entry-level food service position. We’re looking for someone who can bring real culinary knowledge and experience to our team while delivering the warm, personal service our customers expect from a neighborhood butcher shop.

Key Responsibilities

· Serve as a trusted key holder, including independently opening and closing the store

· Complete opening and closing procedures accurately and consistently

· Provide exceptional, knowledgeable, and engaging customer service

· Help customers select the right cuts of beef, pork, poultry, seafood, and other products for their needs

· Explain different cuts of meat and recommend appropriate preparation and cooking methods

· Provide customers with suggestions for marinades, seasonings, side dishes, recipes, and complete meals

· Prepare ready-to-cook, value-added, and prepared food products for our cases

· Perform daily food prep while maintaining high standards for quality, consistency, and presentation

· Assist with cutting, trimming, portioning, packaging, and labeling products as needed

· Help develop and test new menu items, prepared foods, recipes, marinades, meal solutions, and seasonal offerings

· Bring new ideas and culinary creativity to our prepared-food and ready-to-cook selections

· Maintain clean, organized, attractive, and fully stocked product cases and sales areas

· Monitor product quality and freshness and assist with proper product rotation

· Follow all food safety, sanitation, and handling procedures

· Assist with inventory and stocking as needed

· Help train and support team members on products, preparation techniques, customer service, and store procedures

· Take ownership of the customer experience and daily store standards when management is not present

What We’re Looking For

Required:

· Strong working knowledge of meat cuts and their best uses

· Ability to confidently recommend cooking methods and preparation techniques

· Strong general culinary knowledge and a genuine passion for food and cooking

· Superb customer service and communication skills

· Ability to safely use knives and standard food-preparation equipment

· Dependable, responsible, and comfortable being entrusted with store keys and opening/closing responsibilities

· Strong attention to cleanliness, food safety, organization, presentation, and product quality

· Ability to work independently, solve problems, and take initiative

· Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small team

· Availability to work a flexible retail schedule, including some weekends

Preferred Experience

· Previous experience in a butcher shop, specialty food market, restaurant kitchen, grocery meat department, catering operation, or similar culinary environment

· Experience creating recipes, prepared foods, or new menu items

· Previous key-holder, shift-lead, or supervisory experience

· Food safety certification or similar training

Position Details

Location:  Southern Steer Butcher – Alpharetta, GA

Schedule:  Must have availability for a combination of opening, closing, and weekend shifts.
