Job Title: Multi-Modality Technologist (Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography)
Reports to: Chief Technologist and/or Site Manager and/or MRI Modality Specialist
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
*This position does not meet the criteria for exemption from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act; thus you will be eligible to receive overtime compensation, as appropriate. Overtime requires prior approval from your supervisor.
JOB SUMMARY
The Multi-Modality Technologist is responsible for providing courteous and professional delivery of MR and CT technical procedures/exams to all incoming patients. The person in this position ensures each individual's safety in the MR environment before entering the magnetic field and positions patients for CT scans using immobilization and protective equipment as necessary. The Multi-Modality Technologist responds to patient questions and concerns regarding exam procedures and process, while maintaining appropriate confidentiality regarding personal health information, including but not limited to, patient diagnosis, health history, demographics, and referral information. The Multi-Modality Technologist is responsible for all paperwork associated with technical procedures and responds to physician questions and needs regarding patient procedures. Some technologists may work under the direct medical supervision of a physician during certain procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ensures the safety of patients, staff and visitors who come in contact with the powerful magnetic field of the MRI scanner.
• Screens patients and other personnel entering the MRI scan room for contraindications prior to contact with the magnetic field.
• Explains procedures, answer patient questions as completely as possible, and provides emotional support.
• Accurately positions patients and coils on the MRI table according to exam protocol.
• Sets appropriate technical parameters, operates MRI scanners and related equipment, reviews computer monitors for image data quality and takes appropriate corrective steps as needed.
• Guides, monitors, and communicates with patients during the exam, which may take between 30 minutes and up to two hours or more to complete.
• Uses ALARA concept to minimize patient radiation doses. Documents and reports any over-exposures and advises management immediately.
• Recognizes and responds appropriately to life threatening situations.
• Assists in the education and MRI/CT training of staff and/or externs.
• Notates into RIS the referring physicians’ instructions/diagnosis and relevant patient medical history, and scans
appropriate forms as required.
• Routinely checks scanners and related equipment for safety issues and cleanliness. Reports safety issues to the manager or MR/CT specialist and cleans equipment as needed.
• Keeps MR and CT exam rooms and dressing booths clean and properly stocked with supplies.
• Follows all safety procedures for self, patients, visitors, and equipment.
• Educates new staff and students of any teaching institutions about the dangers of the MR and CT environment and appropriate safety precautions.
• Administers oral, rectal, and IV contrast as needed, in a safe and effective manner.
• Monitors patients’ well-being during scans; recognizes patient discomfort or medical problems and takes appropriate action.
• Understands and uses imaging parameter: Field of view, kVp, mAs, and other adjustments and factors on the equipment in order to produce high quality images.
• Checks patient history, and obtains appropriate signed waivers, if necessary.
• Screens patients for contraindications for the use of gadolinium contrast material.
• Screens patients for contraindications to iodinated contrast injection.
• Consults with radiologist when necessary to determine appropriate scanning procedure.
• Responds to physician questions and needs regarding patients and procedures, and assists with interventional procedures as needed.
• Checks referral for appropriate study based on patient history.
• Provides films and/or CDs as requested by the patient or referring physician.
• Conducts and documents daily, weekly and monthly QC and ACR testing.
• Participates in projects and completes other tasks as assigned by management.
• Performs complex specialized tasks associated with the operation of CT scanners and related equipment in accordance with prescribed radiation safety procedures.
• Positions patients for CT scans using immobilization and protective equipment as necessary.
• Assists radiologist with imaging and interventional procedures, starting IV's, and injecting contrast if needed.
• Evaluates CT scans for technical quality, collates processed images in sequence of exposure and appropriately labels film/transmit to PACS.
• Exercises sound judgment regarding image quality; seeks guidance from radiologist if concerned about what scan reveals and obtains prior approval before doing additional scans/views in order to better diagnose the patient’s possible pathology.
• Loads and operates power injections for contrast media administration.
• Provides care for the psychological and physical needs of patients for CT and MR scans.
• Produces high quality diagnostic images in a timely manner while providing excellent patient care.
• Treats patients and customers, including family members or care providers that may accompany the patient with courtesy, professionalism and respect.
• Completes all paperwork and exam reports associated with technical procedures.
• Assures room is ready prior to the patient entering the room (i.e. equipment is operable, all supplies are readily available, and has been appropriately cleaned and prepped).
• Handles delicate situations (tumors, cancerous pathology, etc.) in a supportive and empathetic manner (“good bedside manners”) while maintaining appropriate confidentiality regarding exam outcomes or potential issues.
• Keeps patient schedule and accommodates add-on patients when requested.
• Communicates delays or changes in the schedule to the appropriate person(s).
• Releases patient with proper follow-up information, including forms, when applicable.
• Maintains accurate patient records.
• Monitors Patient Library and print films as needed.
• Guides patients through a sometimes difficult process by kindly talking them through the steps and answering their questions and concerns regarding exam procedures and processes.
• Reports CT overexposure using RadNet Applications QA Tracker CT Exposure Incident report.
• Performs other related duties incidental to the work therein.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE
Must have current ARRT(R) certification with State License in Diagnostic Radiologic Technology (CRT), or ARMRIT certification.
Must have training and certification in venipuncture for the injection of contrast media via butterfly needle and IV catheter.
Requires a high school diploma or GED.
Must have CPR certification.
Maintain license and continuing education in accordance with state, federal, and regulatory agencies’ rules and
regulations.
Ability to relate to the public in a professional and courteous manner, understanding the objectives of the organization, regardless of racial, ethnic, religion, sexual orientation, gender, mental/physical health, age, economic status, etc.
Familiarity with and ability to use specialized ancillary equipment.
Ability to respond to emergency situations in a calm and appropriate fashion.
The above knowledge, skills and abilities may be demonstrated by successful completion of an ARRT accredited Radiologic Technology and MRI program; completion of accredited ARMRIT program and appropriate registrations and/or certifications.
Possesses and utilizes excellent customer service skills, strong written and verbal communications skills, and other medical related skills/knowledge.
Must be detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to interact effectively with doctors, patients, vendors, peers, staff and management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position often requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, reaching with hands and arms, using hands and fingers, handling or palpating, speaking, listening, and high-level cognition. Also, must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, occasionally. All employees are to assist and participate as members of a lift assistance team (for special accommodation patients or any patient requiring assistance onto a table or equipment placement) to initiate or complete an exam or procedure.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Technologists work in an outpatient medical office setting with low to moderate noise level.
