Senior Bi Developer / Analytics Engineer (Listed As Senior Software Engineer)

Location: Remote (U.S.) Duration: 12-Month Contract Client Location: Rochester Pay Rate: $60-$70/hr.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior BI Developer / Analytics Engineer to own the semantic layer and build enterprise reporting solutions across Power BI, Tableau, and legacy SAS environments. This role will support ongoing modernization efforts involving the transition from SAS to a cloud-based analytics platform leveraging GCP/BigQuery and Power BI.

The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Power BI, Tableau, SQL, semantic layer design, performance optimization, healthcare analytics, and data governance. The candidate should be comfortable working across both legacy and modern BI stacks while ensuring consistency, scalability, and self-service reporting capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Power BI & Analytics

• Design, develop, and maintain advanced Power BI reports and datasets.
• Create complex DAX measures, calculated columns, and KPIs.
• Implement row-level security (RLS) and performance optimization techniques.
• Develop and maintain semantic models for enterprise reporting.

Tableau

• Support and maintain complex Tableau dashboards.
• Migrate Tableau reporting assets to Power BI where appropriate.
• Optimize dashboard performance and user experience.

Semantic Layer Ownership

• Own and maintain the semantic layer across SAS, cloud analytics platforms, and Power BI.
• Ensure metric consistency, governance, and performance across reporting tools.
• Define and document business logic, measures, KPIs, and data definitions.

Data & Cloud Technologies

• Query, model, and optimize data within GCP/BigQuery environments.
• Develop scalable reporting datasets and analytical models.
• Perform SQL development and query tuning.

Legacy Environment Support

• Support and interpret legacy SAS reports and processes.
• Assist with SAS retirement and migration initiatives.
• Ensure continuity during platform modernization efforts.

Documentation & Governance

• Maintain documentation for datasets, measures, lineage, and reporting logic.
• Support self-service analytics initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with healthcare data governance standards.

Healthcare Analytics

• Develop reports supporting clinical and administrative operations.
• Follow HIPAA guidelines and PHI protection standards.
• Implement secure reporting practices including row-level security and audit controls.

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience in Data Analytics, Business Intelligence, or Reporting.
• 5+ years of hands-on Power BI development experience.
• Advanced expertise in:

• Performance Tuning
• Advanced Tableau dashboard development and support.
• Strong SQL development and optimization skills.
• Experience with GCP and/or BigQuery.
• Experience designing and supporting semantic layers.
• Experience supporting legacy SAS environments.
• Strong documentation and data lineage experience.
• Experience working in Agile environments.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Analytics, or related field.

• Experience with clinical or healthcare reporting.
• Python and/or R programming experience.
• Data Warehousing experience.
