About the Role
Robert Half is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Accountant for a contract opportunity with a respected nonprofit organization in New Haven, Connecticut. This position is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys supporting mission-driven organizations and has a strong background in financial reporting, general ledger accounting, month-end close processes, and compliance.
The Senior Accountant will play a key role in maintaining the organization's financial integrity, supporting leadership with reporting and analysis, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger activity
- Lead month-end and year-end closing processes
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and management reports
- Analyze financial data and assist with budgeting and forecasting activities
- Reconcile bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and restricted funds
- Assist with grant tracking, reporting, and compliance requirements
- Support annual audit preparation and coordinate requests from external auditors
- Monitor internal controls and recommend process improvements
- Review accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll transactions for accuracy
- Assist with cash flow analysis and financial planning initiatives
- Partner with department leaders to provide financial guidance and reporting support
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- 4+ years of accounting experience, including general ledger and financial reporting responsibilities
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial statement preparation
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Experience with accounting software and ERP systems
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a nonprofit organization
- Knowledge of fund accounting and grant accounting
- Experience supporting audits and preparing audit schedules
- Familiarity with nonprofit financial reporting requirements, including restricted and unrestricted funds
- CPA or CPA candidate preferred
Schedule
- Full-time, Monday through Friday
- Standard business hours
- Contract assignment with potential for extension based on organizational needs
