Environmental Lands Management Technician (Tier 2) Prescribed Fire Crew

Job Overview

This position provides a wide range of land management and restoration activities in support of the Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program (ELAPP). This position is responsible for maintaining and improving the ecological health, public access, and long-term sustainability of natural preserves and conservation lands. Maintains trails and facilities, controlling invasive species, supporting prescribed fire operations, conducting habitat restoration, and assisting with environmental monitoring and public outreach.

Salary

Minimum: $36,732.80-$47,752.64/ yearly

Tier 2

Job Distinctions

Performs technical and supervisory duties in an environmental data collection and monitoring of incoming solid waste at disposal facilities; and the routine installation, calibration, maintenance and operation of related instruments and equipment. Prepares reports and communicates findings with other sections.

• Supervises and coordinates the acquisition and handling of field and/or laboratory environmental data.
• Monitors incoming solid waste at disposal facilities for acceptability and presence of hazardous waste, keeps records and reports violations.
• Inspects incoming solid waste at landfills and prepares reports on contents by type, volume, and composition.
• Initiates actions for the removal of hazardous or undesirable material from landfills.
• Prepares various reports and data summaries for departmental dissemination.
• Reviews data generated by various departments and recommends or takes necessary action.
• May operate, maintain, and calibrate various environmental monitoring equipment; and provides other general technical assistance as required.
• Supervises the work of subordinate staff by scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, providing training and counseling, and evaluating performance.
• Performs others related duties as required.

Physical Requirements

• Work is typically performed in an office or laboratory environment.

• May require sitting for extended periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications Required

• Associate's degree in Natural Science; AND
• Two years’ experience in environmental inspection or evaluation; or in the operation of environmental monitoring equipment; OR
• An equivalent combination of education (not less that possession of a High School diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND
• Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.

Career Progression

Employees in this classification that acquire the competencies and minimum qualifications for the next tier will be able to apply for promotional opportunities through a competitive selection process. Employees will not automatically be upgraded to the next tier. Reclassifying a position is based on business need and financial impact and is not based solely on the job competencies or qualifications of the incumbent.
