We focus on teaching theatre skills applicable to our students in both community and professional theatre. But most importantly, the skills that students learn in theatre apply to nearly all other career choices. We promote learning opportunities in the performing arts that spark knowledge, self-confidence, leadership skills, critical thinking, empathy, understanding and acceptance of others, taking responsibility, public speaking, and inspire creative thinking, individual expression, and to contribute as a valuable member of a close-knit team. Our Inclusive Theatre Program Expose students to all aspects of the practice of theatre including but not limited to acting, stage management, set design and set building, script writing, lighting & sound, improv, directing, dancing, singing, and movement. Engage parents and community members in all aspects of creating community theatre. Provide fun, inspiring, entertaining and affordable live theater events for the East Side community. The show “must go on” but not for every individual. We have a healthy use of understudies, swings, and reliable flexing from our cast members. Student voice and leadership is highly important and an expected part of the program. About the Position: Lake Washington High School is seeking to hire an independent contractor to serve as our musical director for the 2026-2027 school year which will include music directing our spring musical, Hadestown: School Edition. This job reports to drama teacher/theatre director. Responsibilities Auditioning the singers and making casting recommendations to the drama teacher/director Scheduling music rehearsals in collaboration with the drama teacher/director, choreographer and stage manager Helping cast members learn their music Leading music rehearsals for principals, chorus and orchestra Serving as conductor--or, in consultation with the drama teacher/director, hiring a conductor In consultation with the drama teacher/director, selecting a rehearsal pianist and orchestra members Working with the technical director on sound needs for orchestra and microphone needs for actors Providing rehearsal tracks if not provided by rights company/using track application programs to make edits Attending production meetings and rehearsals, as needed Assisting with recruitment/organization of pit orchestra (often mix of students and professionals) Collaborating with choreographer on music needs for dance and vice versa Possibly: Assisting with other musical needs throughout the year including but not limited to audition workshops, development, skilled focus, collaboration meetings, etc Qualifications 4+ years within industry as a musical director Plays piano or access to a rehearsal accompanist Can conduct a musical Experience teaching voice Able to work with cast members on vocal demands (both how to sing and what to sing) AND work with orchestra members on performance readiness Strong organizational skills Strong customer engagement skills with students, directors, and parents Works well under pressure Enthusiastic, flexible, patient, and positive demeanor Adheres to code of conduct, safety procedures, LWSD requirements for independent contractors/adult volunteers Willing to go through a full background check Availability Monday-Friday 3pm-6pm, tech week 5pm-10pm (April 26-29th), sitzprobe either April 24th or 25th daytime, performances call at 5pm or 11am, show at 7pm or 1pm, until end of show. Auditions in November (scheduled with team), rehearsals starting in December and continuing January-April. Performances April 30th at 7pm, May 1st at 1pm and 7pm, May 6th at 7pm, May 7th at 7pm, and May 8th at 1pm and 7pm. Desired Qualifications Ideal Candidate Has a bachelors and or/masters degree in music Is interested in returning to our organization if the first year is a successful partnership/good fit for all Establishes and maintains relationships with collaborators, students, and families Other Details A job offer will be for the 2026-2027 school year with potential to continue into future years.
