Senior Staff Accountant – Security and Employment Service Center (SESC) Job Class Code: 0330 | Grade: 23 (Professional/Technical) | Salary: $50,383.89 - $70,694.83 annually (includes 2.25% stipend) | Location: Augusta, ME | Opening Date: June 9, 2026 | Closing Date: June 24, 2026 As a Senior Staff Accountant in the Department of Administrative and Financial Services at SESC, you will work closely with agency managers and program administrators to assess financial status, produce reports, and advise on accounting data for management decisions. The position is based in Augusta, Maine with some telework availability. Primary Responsibilities Reconcile complex accounts, formulate corrections, make adjusting entries, and recommend system and process changes to eliminate future problems and improve processes. Prepare and review program financial reports, ensuring the accurate communication of critical financial information to internal and external customers. Monitor budget balances, identify discrepancies, and formulate corrective actions to ensure accurate financial oversight, enabling informed decisions and optimal resource allocation. Review, analyze, and research financial data to resolve issues, ensuring reasonableness and accuracy. Consult with financial and program staff to identify business needs, compliance issues and reporting requirements, and to ensure compliance with state and federal fiscal policies. Apply working knowledge of state and federal accounting principles, including funding source management and accurate reporting of expenditures and revenues. Qualifications Intermediate to advanced education, training, and/or demonstrated experience in accounting. Experience and/or education demonstrating a working knowledge of GAAP and GASB. Analytical skills to review financial data, reach logical conclusions, and explain implications for agency programs and operations. Experience performing complex reconciliations. Ability to identify problems and recommend needed corrections. Ability to prepare cash forecasts, revenue estimates, and expenditure projections. Good communication skills within the SESC team and with agency personnel. Critical thinking skills, flexibility, and adaptability to a fast‑paced environment.
