Field Service Engineer – Custom Equipment
Location: Elk Grove Village, IL
Compensation: $70,000–$90,000 base salary depending on experience
Travel: Domestic travel approximately 70%, typically 2–4 days per week with weekends home

About the Role
This is a field service position for someone who brings equal parts technical skill and professional presence. You will be the face of the company in front of customers ranging from smaller manufacturers to large, well-known industrial operations, and your job is to keep their equipment running, keep them confident in the product, and identify ways to deepen the service relationship.
The company manufactures custom equipment and currently has more service demand than capacity. This role was created to address that gap and grow the service business beyond its current footprint. The right person will not just perform repairs and installations but will help build the processes, documentation, and customer relationships that turn service into a scalable revenue stream.
When not in the field, you will be based onsite at the facility working to create SOPs, digitize paper-based service records, update equipment manuals, and put real organizational structure around the service function. This is the part of the job that most field service roles never offer. You will shape how this department runs.
This role will evolve. As the service function grows, supervisory responsibility is on the table for the right person.

Responsibilities

• Travel to customer sites to calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair custom equipment
• Handle a wide range of technical work including electronics, controls, hydraulics, and mechanical systems
• Train customer personnel on proper equipment operation and maintenance procedures
• Actively promote service contracts, calibration plans, preventive maintenance agreements, and equipment upgrades
• Build strong customer relationships and serve as the first point of contact for ongoing service needs
• When not traveling, work onsite to develop SOPs, digitize paper-based service records, and create organized workflows
• Update and maintain equipment manuals and technical reference materials
• Provide feedback from the field to internal teams to support product improvement and service planning
• Identify upsell opportunities and communicate them to leadership
• Support in-house operations including light assembly and testing as needed

Requirements

• BS/ AAS / Maintenance certifications in electronics or engineering preferred or an equivalent of 4+ years of service / maintenance experience on equipment
• 3+ years of field service or maintenance experience on industrial, capital, or electro-mechanical equipment
• Strong electronics and controls background required; must be comfortable with electrical work
• Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical troubleshooting
• Demonstrated ability to read schematics and use diagnostic tools and multimeters
• Strong customer-facing communication skills, professional presentation, and consultative approach
• Sales awareness and comfort identifying service opportunities in the field
• Self-directed, organized, and able to work independently with minimal oversight
• Willing and able to travel approximately 70% of the time, primarily domestically with occasional international trips
• Valid driver's license and passport, or ability to obtain one
