Teacher Assistant

School Day 3421 Martha Bush Dr Ellicott City, MD 21043, USA The Teacher Assistant is a collaborative position within the school building. The Teacher Assistant provides assistance with instruction, engages students during academic and non-instructional activities, and monitors students while moving to and from various locations and activities. He/she must be able to take direction from all supervisors in implementing best practices and support students through both work tasks and limits set by supervisors. The Teacher Assistant must also be a capable leader who can train and provide support to fellow Instructional Assistants, and provide classroom instructional coverage in the absence of the assigned teacher. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Effectively and professionally communicates with supervisors, students, multidisciplinary team, other school staff, and parents/caregivers Train and provide guidance to new classroom staff Design professional development for instructional assistants While serving as the substitute special educator Implement lesson plans and pulls from curriculum resources as needed Independently manage classroom activities and instruction Implement instructional plans designed by professional staff Implement instructional plans designed by professional staff and facilitate student learning by implementing IEP adaptations, strategies, and supplementary aids Collect required data related to IEP goals, academic skills, and life skills Implement Behavior Intervention Plans with fidelity File and monitor academic data for the school Complete assistive technology checks (i.e. iPads, chrome books) throughout the building on an ongoing basis Adhere to exclusion, seclusion, and restraint regulations Serve as a role model for instructional assistants Engage students during academic work Engage students during academic and non-academic activities Use a neutral tone when managing behaviors Collect required academic and behavior data Assist students with daily living skills such as feeding, toileting, and completing hygiene activities as needed Support students in vocational and career development activities by promoting independence with guided supports as appropriate, this can be within the school building or in the local community Attends and actively participates in classroom and school based meetings and professional developments Maintains current valid CPR/ First Aid and Professional Crisis Management (PCM) certification at the Practitioner level (or higher). Attends and participates in mandated training, staff meetings, and other activities to facilitate professional development. May perform other duties as assigned Adheres to Linwood School policies and procedures Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s Degree is required At least one year of working in a school setting is highly preferred At least one year working with individuals with autism or related disabilities is highly preferred. Must have a valid driver’s MD license and an acceptable driving record as determined by criteria established by the Agency’s insurance carrier and by Agency policy. Abilities: Possess a skill set that can interface professionally with Linwood staff, parents, school system personnel, and other professionals. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills. Be energetic and enthusiastic, as well as, patient. Demonstrates interest and ability to address the developmental and social emotional needs of individuals with autism. Is flexible enough to work in various classrooms when moved and work cooperatively with all staff. Must be able to work independent of direct supervision and be proactive in taking the lead in various situations and with task completion. Physical Demands and Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Frequently required to use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, various forms of technology, or controls. Must be able to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, run, or crawl. Must be able to work under regular, moderate levels of stress. Must be able to lift and move up to 10 lbs. regularly and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
