The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking motivated Internship Construction Technicians to support transportation projects across the state. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public service while contributing to the maintenance and improvement of Wyoming's transportation infrastructure.

As an Intern Construction Technician, you will assist with surveying, materials testing, and construction inspection activities. These duties play a critical role in ensuring the quality, safety, and durability of highways, bridges, and related structures that serve Wyoming's communities.

This position provides practical, real-world experience in the construction and transportation field while working in Wyoming's wide-open spaces and scenic Mountain West environment. Essential functions include inspecting construction projects, preparing, reviewing, maintaining and filing construction project records, estimates, and reports; performing topographic surveys; conducting aggregate gradation testing, density testing for earthwork and surfacing, and concrete testing; performing survey tasks such as drive stakes, hubs, hold tapes, hold the rod, and instrument operation; performing minor surveying computations such as slopes, areas, volumes, cuts, fills, etc.; inspecting pipe backfill and fill construction; inspecting paving operation to ensure compliance with plans and specifications; performing minor engineering computations such as areas, volumes, material spread rates, etc.; testing, sampling, and reporting materials proposed to be used in construction projects; reviewing and learning test methods, manuals, and procedures; performing basic engineering calculations; performing testing and sampling on bridges and roadways for analysis; reviewing and learning traffic control methods, manuals, and procedures; setting up, maintaining, and removing a safe traffic control plan under live traffic conditions; maintaining traffic control devices in the field; performing traffic control duties; assisting in the investigation of existing roadways for forensic study; assisting in gathering samples, providing a safe working zone, flagging, etc.; ensuring that proper equipment and supplies are loaded and in good working condition; performing more complex lab tests of samples and documenting results for QA/QC purposes; serving as a technical resource for other employees; attending and completing all designated training sessions to maintain required certifications and performing inspections; communicating internally and externally regarding project information and courses of action/consequences on smaller projects; overseeing smaller projects and/or components of larger projects; assisting permit processes to obtain water, gravel, plant site, and surveying agreements and aids in the renewal and file maintenance of these agreements; maintaining contract documents in the Construction Management System.

Preferences/Agency Requirements: Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT. Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving. Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification. Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification.

Knowledge: Knowledge of materials testing. Surveying methods and equipment operation. Knowledge of construction inspection, which includes the interpretation of plans and specifications. Knowledge of documentation of project records. Knowledge of communication with supervisors and contractors. Knowledge of working towards a leadership role. Knowledge of working outdoors and a variety of weather conditions. Knowledge of material testing, ability to perform complicated computer calculations. Knowledge of survey methods & ability to apply such as uploading & downloading of survey files. Knowledge of computers and calculators. Knowledge of surveying. Knowledge of contract time, administration & contract changes. Knowledge of engineering computations/formulas. Knowledge of core drilling equipment, pneumatic & electric jackhammers, and hand tools.

Physical Working Conditions: Potentially exposed to hazardous waste and biological waste. Working around high-speed traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work outdoors in various inclement weather conditions to include heat, cold, snow, and wet. Physical Ability: Bending, stooping, and lifting up to fifty pounds; safely lifting and moving necessary materials from one point to another; ability to stand for long periods of time. Must be available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

Individuals must report to the department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call. Occasional overnight travel is required.
