#140177 (NP) Nurse Practitioner - Trauma Surgery UC San Diego Health is a Magnet designated organization, recognized as a “gold standard” for nursing excellence. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) functions as a provider of patient care in the fields of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and General Surgery. The NP provides full clinical support in the management of inpatients and outpatients, plans, implements, and evaluates health care treatments for critically ill and injured patients, assists in General Surgery and Trauma Clinics, and may assume additional duties assigned by the Trauma Director. The position requires specialized skills and knowledge in trauma, critical care, and general surgery. The NP also develops and provides patient education, participates in research and quality assurance studies, and serves as a liaison with trauma coordinators, financial counselors, social workers, and research nurses. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification. Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) Specialty Certification from one of the following Nursing Boards: ACNP or AGACNP. BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within 6 months of hire date. Two or more years of recent Nurse Practitioner experience in trauma, acute care surgery, or surgical critical care. Experience caring for injured or critically ill surgical patients and ability to manage common trauma-related procedures. Participation in trauma activations and emergency responses; experience with Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) principles. Ability to counsel patients and families, especially in delicate or death‑and‑dying situations, and communicate effectively with patients and health care personnel. Ability to write orders regarding inpatient and outpatient treatment plans. Working knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices pertaining to medical and socioeconomic issues. Ability to assess daily status and progress of patients and report effectively to the physician and care team. Ability to serve a large volume of patients rapidly and effectively within set time limits. Skill in recording nursing and medical assessment findings accurately. Skill in clear written, verbal, and telephone communication with a wide variety of people. Ability to analyze and interpret data meaningfully. Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment. Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics including pharmacology, counseling techniques, and interpersonal dynamics. Ability to perform initial history and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action. Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized, retrievable manner and knowledge of all treatment modalities necessary for patient care. Effective communication skills—helpful, non‑judgmental, and informative—in person or by phone; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member. Writing skills for preparing clear medical reports, laboratory data, progress notes, and policies, procedures, and protocols for patient care management; skill in participating in research or quality assurance studies. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Level 1 trauma experience. Knowledge of clinical and ancillary services within the UCSD Medical Center. SPECIAL CONDITIONS Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on‑call, and locations based on a 24‑hour medical center’s business needs; some weekend work and overtime may be required. Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre‑employment physical. Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain them during employment; advanced practice credentialing experience must be within the last two years. Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council. PAY Annual Full Pay Range: $176,624 – $247,157 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%). Hourly Equivalent: $84.59 – $118.37.
