Location Foster City Vice President Controller Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President‑Controller has primary responsibility for the management of the organization’s accounting department, including all aspects of corporate, development, property, resident services, and treasury functions. As the day‑to‑day operations leader for the accounting department, this position is responsible for implementing new accounting standards and procedures, ensuring compliance with existing accounting and agency regulations, instituting internal controls to minimize risks and the preparation of financial reports for annual audits, tax compliance, management, regulatory agencies, and the Board of Directors. The Vice President‑Controller will coordinate the accounting activities with departments across the organization and ensure that all financial transactions, information, and reports, policies, and procedures are in accordance with US GAAP standards and are accurately and timely submitted to management and regulatory agencies as required. Success in the role will be measured by consistent high‑quality delivery of the job duties, successful mentoring of the accounting team, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to positively influence and interact at all levels of the organization within the framework of the MidPen mission and core values. Responsibilities Direct the activities concerned with safekeeping, control, and accounting for assets and securities Direct and coordinate the organization’s financial affairs according to financial principles and regulations Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems Ensure compliance with US GAAP, regulatory requirements, and MidPen standards, including all financial reporting obligations Develop and maintain policies and procedures of financial recordkeeping and reporting; maintain accounting internal controls and safeguards Direct the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual, and consolidated financial close processes Maintain inter‑entity reconciliation and related financial recordkeeping processes to ensure compliance with accounting and control systems Review financial plans vs. actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate Lead all audit and tax preparation activities and manage relationships with auditors and outsourced vendors Support the CFO in engaging the Board and committees (Audit, Finance) on audit, tax, and financial results Oversee treasury, cash reporting, and track performance of invested assets in line with policies and guidelines Administer all aspects of new accounting technology implementation Manage, mentor, and develop a high‑performing accounting team; leverage team strengths and clarify roles and responsibilities Develop and implement training programs and promote a positive, communicative, and supportive work environment Directly supervise treasury, Development Assistant Controller, and Property Assistant Controller; perform other duties as assigned Qualifications Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in accounting from an accredited university and 10 years of progressive accounting responsibility or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience Significant accounting leadership experience as a Controller or Senior Accounting Officer Experience within affordable housing/real estate industry preferred Certified Public Accounting (CPA) certification preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Excellent oral, written, and communication skills Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word Strong leadership and management skills with previous experience managing people, delegating workload, and providing direction/corrections as necessary Must have the ability to select, motivate, retain, coach, and develop a high‑performing team Must possess a valid California Driver’s License, proof of current auto insurance, and reliable transportation Commitment to the Mission and Values of MidPen Services and MidPen Housing Physical Requirements Constantly perform desk‑based computer tasks Frequently sit Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 15 pounds Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl Pay Range $250,000.00 - $275,000.00 Annual Salary - Pay based on applicable experience and qualifications Benefits and Compensation Health Insurance Dental, Vision, Life & Disability Insurance 403(b) Retirement Investment Employee Education Reimbursement Program Paid Parental Leave FSA for Childcare, Medical, and Commuter Benefits EAP Program Pet Insurance Paid Time Off Company Holidays Wellness Days EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER MidPen Housing Corp. provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.
