The department works to support the University’s goal of delivering high‑quality higher education and research in a peaceful learning environment. Officers serve in various roles to support this mission. The full salary range for the Police Officer is $100,766.88 – $126,699.84 annually. Base salary offers consider education, licensure, certifications, experience, and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization; sponsorship of a visa is not available. Requirements Educational Requirements U.S. high school diploma; GED certificate; high school equivalency certificate; or a two‑, four‑, or advanced degree from an accredited or approved college/university. Completion of the POST Regular Basic Course in either the intensive or extended format within one year of appointment. License Requirements Possession of a valid, class "C" California driver’s license with a prudent driving record. Certification Requirements Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced POST Certificate from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (preferred). Special Conditions Public driving record, drug and alcohol test, overtime, and shift work (hours outside standard Mon‑Fri 8:00 AM‑5:00 PM). Willingness to travel and work special event assignments on other UC campuses. U.S. citizenship; 21 years of age or older. Vision no less than 20/100, correctable to at least 20/30 in both eyes; normal color vision. No hearing impairment. No felony convictions. Extensive background investigation; no findings inconsistent with the University’s principles and values. Successful assessment by an interview panel comprising police department personnel, students, non‑police staff, and faculty. Ability to complete minimum physical agility requirements. Willingness to work rotating shifts with changing days off in a twenty‑four‑seven‑day operation. Ability to meet rigorous mental and physical police work requirements and perform under pressure. Strong oral and written communication skills; basic computer proficiency. Preferred Qualifications Current or recent affiliation with the University of California as a student or staff member. Knowledge of current police practices, protocols, and procedures. Understanding of the California criminal justice system and applicable local, state, and federal laws. Key Responsibilities Conduct vehicle, foot, and bike patrols within assigned beat, focusing on campus buildings, facilities, grounds, roadways, and housing. Patrol campus grounds, buildings, and facilities to detect crimes, hazards, and security deficiencies; investigate and report findings. Monitor vehicular and pedestrian traffic, enforcing safety laws, rules, and regulations by warning and/or citation. Investigate suspicious circumstances, persons, and vehicles; deter and detect criminal activity. (60% of time) Respond promptly and appropriately to calls for service, including crime reports, public safety assistance, medical aid requests, and other reasonable requests. (20% of time) Serve in investigative duties: make arrests, write reports, conduct crime scene examinations, testify in court, and perform related tasks. (15% of time) Carry out other assigned duties such as community relations presentations, administrative research projects, and mutual aid assignments to other law‑enforcement agencies. (5% of time) Be eligible for specialty assignments (investigator, field training officer, crime prevention officer) and receive additional compensation for such roles. Other Requirements Use of presentation equipment, marked and unmarked police vehicles, various firearms, less lethal weapons, handcuffs, police radio equipment, scanner, standard office equipment, fax machines, and computer.
