Staff Attorney Position

The U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), established in 1911, is a nongovernmental, not-for-profit international organization dedicated to addressing the needs and rights of refugees and immigrants. USCRI advocates for the rights of refugees and immigrants both nationally and globally, helping to drive humanitarian policies, practices, and law.

USCRI seeks a Staff Attorney to serve in the Albany, NY field office. The attorney will assist with part of the Office for New Americans Opportunity center and other programs as designated by the Associate Director of Humanitarian Legal Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Office for New Americans Opportunity Center

• Responsible for overall oversight, financial management, staff training, and support
• Report preparation and submission
• Review and preparation of immigration applications
• Preparation, presentation, and community engagement of immigration community workshops

Legal Operations Support

• Collect, review, and analyze legal data reports on a monthly basis
• Respond and make referrals for legal inquires received through USCRI Headquarter channels
• Create and/or update Humanitarian Legal Services standard operating procedures as necessary
• Assist with legal funding development including collaboration on funding proposals

Direct Representation

• Provide direct legal representation as needed to support staff transitions and new programming.
• Representation may include but is not limited to: Immigration Court Representation: including Master Calendar Hearings, Individual Hearings, Motions (Motions to Continue, Motions to Terminate, Motions to Change Venue, etc.), Voluntary Departure
• Attendance at USCIS interviews
• Application support including but not limited to: SIJS, Asylum, T visas, U visas, VAWA, Adjustment of Status, Family-Based immigration, Consular Processing, TPS, EADs

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school
• Active membership in good standing with a state bar association
• Minimum 2-3 years of immigration legal experience and/or program management
• Excellent legal research, writing, and editing skills
• Strong organizational, analytical, and project management skills
• Demonstrated support for USCRI's values by exhibiting respect for others, maintaining confidential information and an appreciation of a multicultural workplace.
