Fire Engineer

Town Of Nashville NC

General Statement of Duties Performs responsible fire suppression and incident response activities including operating fire apparatus and participating in firefighting. Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression, incident response personnel, and operations at the fire station. The employee participates in incident response, including emergency medical service, operation of fire apparatus, firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials response/mitigation, and equipment and facilities maintenance. The employee also participates in incidence response and fire suppression training. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment, and requires the employee to incorporate the necessary changes into in-service training. The ability to make effective decisions under pressure is required in all aspects of work, particularly in operating apparatus during fire response. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incidence response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed. FLSA Status Responds to alarms and participates in incidence response including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required. Responds to and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials, and other related incidents. Responds to emergency medical incidents and provides EMT services. Responds to and provides technical rescue services. Drives apparatus to incident scene; properly places apparatus to establish water supply or other needs; ensures proper operation and pressure of hoses; issues equipment and monitors radio traffic for necessary response; returns fire apparatus and related equipment to service after incident response. Inspects station and equipment for proper appearance and condition. Performs maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, station building, hydrants, hose lines, and related facilities, equipment, and supplies. Assists with the preparation of fire reports; participates in special projects as required. Participates in in-service training programs. Participates in fire prevention inspections and pre-incident surveys. May perform special assignments or projects requiring the leadership or coordination of others such as SCBA maintenance and repair, radio equipment maintenance and repair, building maintenance, hydrant maintenance, hose line testing and maintenance, etc. Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures, and principles. Considerable knowledge of the use and operation of emergency equipment and apparatus used by the Town. Considerable knowledge of incident response including response to hazardous materials spills, technical rescue, and emergency medical service calls. Considerable knowledge of departmental rules and regulations. Some knowledge of the application of information technology to work. Thorough knowledge of Town streets and layout. Ability to operate all department equipment and apparatus. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including employees, volunteers, officials, and members of the public. Knowledge of CPR, EMT and First Aid procedures. Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures. Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Ability to prepare clear and concise records and reports of work activities. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to operate or learn to operate all required equipment and apparatus. Ability to work under stress and use good judgment in emergency situations. Ability to respond to requests and inquiries professionally and tactfully from the public. Ability to oversee and assist in resolving a variety of situations characterized by conflict or danger. Ability to operate specialized emergency communications equipment. Ability to operate and maintain a variety of fire rescue equipment. Ability to participate in providing the full range of emergency medical services and use a variety of specialized medical equipment. Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals. Ability to prepare and safely operate department vehicles, apparatus, and other emergency equipment. Ability to work irregular hours including weekends, holidays, and extended hours in emergency, disaster, or other situations influenced by workload or staffing difficulties. Ability to sufficiently wear/use any personal protective equipment provided by the Town of Nashville. Ability to effectively deal with personal danger, which may include exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials, fumes and smoke, intense heat, electrical hazards, confined or high workspaces, dangerous animals, extremely loud noises, hazards of emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic, and natural and man-made disasters. Physical Requirements Ability to pass an air consumption test and physical examination as determined by the Town of Nashville’s contracted healthcare provider. Ability to maintain mental capacity, which permits quickly making sound decisions and using good judgement, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, assessing the situation at an incident scene, and communicating with others. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move or lift equipment and injured/deceased persons. Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, including discerning colors, reading, and writing, and operating assigned equipment. Must possess the visual acuity to size up the color, volume, and extent of fire involvement at fire scenes, to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations, and to prepare records and reports. Desirable Education and Experience Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to meet and maintain vehicle insurability with the Town of Nashville. Must be able to wear proper safety equipment as determined by the Fire Chief in accordance with established OSHA regulations. Must possess a valid class B North Carolina driver’s license upon appointment.
