Post Doctoral Researcher

Florida State University (FSU) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in AI for Video-Based Surgical Skill Assessment, in the College of Engineering. This position offers an exciting opportunity to join a growing interdisciplinary research program focused on developing artificial intelligence methods for the objective assessment of surgical technical performance from video. The successful candidate will contribute to the design of next-generation machine learning and computer vision algorithms that automatically evaluate surgical skill, provide meaningful formative feedback, and support competency-based surgical education. Our research combines deep learning, computer vision, video foundation models, self-supervised learning, explainable AI, and human performance modeling to analyze surgical videos and quantify technical proficiency across a range of surgical procedures. The long-term vision is to develop scalable, objective, and clinically deployable assessment tools that reduce reliance on expert raters while improving the quality, consistency, and accessibility of surgical training. The successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, computer scientists, surgeons, and medical educators to develop novel AI methodologies, publish in leading journals and conferences, mentor graduate students, and contribute to the development of externally funded research programs. Responsibilities Conduct research in AI-enabled video-based surgical skill assessment. Develop novel computer vision and deep learning algorithms for analyzing surgical videos. Develop and evaluate video foundation model architectures for objective assessment of surgical technical performance. Design explainable AI methods that generate clinically meaningful formative feedback from surgical videos. Develop methods for multimodal and longitudinal assessment of surgical performance. Collaborate with surgeons and medical educators to validate AI algorithms using clinical and simulated surgical datasets. Prepare competitive proposals to federal agencies and foundations. Publish research in leading AI, computer vision, biomedical engineering, and surgical education journals. Mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers. Qualifications Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a closely related field. Demonstrated expertise in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, or video understanding. Strong programming skills in Python and experience with modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX. Experience developing and evaluating AI models for image or video analysis. Strong publication record in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and conferences relevant to AI, computer vision, machine learning, or biomedical engineering. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary and collaborative research environments.
