Job Description and Duties Job Description And Duties This is the entry level into the series. As an assistant to a Correctional Plant Operations Manager, incumbents supervise and assist in the operation, maintenance and repair of the physical plant of a State adult correctional facility. Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position. Individuals must specify on their application that they are applying for a Training and Development assignment. Minimum Qualifications One year of experience in California state service performing the duties of a Chief Engineer I (Correctional Facility), Chief Engineer I, Supervisor of Building Trades (Correctional Facility), Supervisor of Building Trades; or Two years of experience in charge of plant maintenance in a plant or facility with a population of at least 750 persons and employing at least 25 persons including both stationary engineers and building tradespersons; or Three years of experience in the supervision of a maintenance crew including several crafts in a plant or facility of at least 750 residents and employees. Knowledge of: Types of heating, electrical, plumbing, water, refrigeration, sewage, and other mechanical systems and equipment; operation and maintenance of high‑pressure steam boilers; materials, methods and tools used in the maintenance of buildings and grounds; operation of mechanical refrigeration and air‑conditioning systems; thermostatic temperature control systems; rules and safety orders of the Division of California Occupational Safety and Health applicable to the operation and maintenance of buildings and grounds; principles of personnel management and supervision; the Department's affirmative action program objectives; a manager's role in the affirmative action program and processes available to meet affirmative action objectives. Ability to: Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; direct the work of installing, operating, and maintaining institution heating, electrical, water, sewage, and other mechanical systems; read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, and specifications; make cost estimates of building repairs, maintenance, and mechanical installations; plan and execute a program of preventive maintenance for buildings and mechanical equipment; plan and direct the work of skilled craftspersons and semi‑skilled workers; keep accurate records and prepare reports; think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action objectives.
