PLANT QUARANTINE SUPERVISOR I

Plant Quarantine Supervisor I – Department of Food & Agriculture Classification: JC-515044 Salary: $5,065 – $6,344 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range when applicable. Job Location: Long Valley Border Protection Station, Lassen County. Responsibilities Under direction of the Plant Quarantine Supervisor II, the Plant Quarantine Supervisor I is responsible for overseeing Plant Quarantine Inspectors, Agricultural Technicians, and Agricultural Aides on rotating shifts, maintaining operational consistency. The supervisor performs regulatory inspections on vehicles and commodities to prevent the introduction of unwanted pests into California and oversees contracted employees and non‑State workers in the facility. Oversee shift operations to ensure effective operations and verify that all work is performed safely and accurately as prescribed by quarantine regulations, the Program operational guide, administrative manual, and other related guides. Manage and observe staff to ensure proper safety and inspection techniques are employed and make immediate corrections if deficiencies are seen. Inspect vehicles to determine if plant material (e.g., fruits, vegetables, plants, etc.) is present and assess admissibility based on quarantine compliance and freedom from pests, including opening, removing containers, climbing, stooping, and bending. Provide feedback to employees regarding job performance through assessments, meetings, and evaluations to encourage and assist staff in career development. Communicate verbally and in writing (e‑mail, memos, phone) with the public and government agencies about the purpose of inspections and quarantine issues. Oversee maintenance of buildings and grounds to ensure the facility is safe, clean, and functional by assisting the Area Manager or Program Supervisor with scopes of work, contract bids, and safety inspections. Working Conditions Employees routinely work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts including day, evening, and night. The job is performed outdoors in private vehicle and truck inspection areas about 60% of the time; the remaining time is spent in an office environment. Workers may be exposed to temperature changes, variable climatic conditions, wind, fumes, odors, and moderate noise. Uniform wearing and safety equipment use is required.
