Associate Attorney General Liability, Mass Torts (Civil Defense)

Position Overview
We are seeking a driven Associate Attorney to join our civil defense litigation team handling general liability and mass tort matters. The successful candidate will manage a diverse caseload, represent insurers and corporate defendants, and work closely with partners, claims professionals, and expert witnesses to achieve favorable outcomes. This role requires strong litigation skills, attention to detail, and the ability to move cases efficiently toward resolution through motion practice, discovery, negotiation, and trial preparation.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage an active caseload of general liability and mass tort cases from intake through resolution, including discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation.
• Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, settlement agreements, and correspondence with clients, courts, and opposing counsel.
• Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on substantive tort and procedural issues relevant to civil defense matters.
• Take and defend depositions, prepare witnesses, and coordinate with expert witnesses and consultants.
• Develop case strategy in collaboration with partners and claims professionals; evaluate liability and damages and recommend settlement strategies.
• Appear in state and federal courts for hearings, status conferences, and trials as needed.
• Communicate regularly with clients to provide case updates, manage expectations, and advise on litigation risks and cost-effective strategies.
• Manage discovery processes, including e-discovery, document production, privilege logs, and meet-and-confers with opposing counsel.
• Track case budgets and billing; supervise and mentor junior attorneys, paralegals, and support staff when appropriate.
• Participate in business development initiatives and contribute to client retention efforts.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active admission to the state bar in good standing.
• 2+ years of litigation experience with a focus on general liability, mass torts, or civil defense preferred; candidates with relevant experience will be prioritized.
• Demonstrated experience with motion practice, discovery strategy, depositions, and courtroom appearances; trial experience a plus.
• Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills with the ability to draft clear, persuasive pleadings and briefs.
• Excellent interpersonal and client-facing skills, including the ability to explain complex legal issues to non-lawyers and work collaboratively with claims teams.
• Proficiency with e-discovery platforms, case management systems, and standard office software (MS Office or equivalent).
• Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines, prioritize tasks, and work effectively under pressure.
• High ethical standards, attention to detail, and commitment to professional development and continuing legal education.

Salary

$140000 - $160000 USD per year
