Youth Services Librarian/Specialist

Youth Services Librarian The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of programs and services to children and their caregivers, including weekly Storytimes. The position requires knowledge or experience in child development and includes special projects at the direction of the Public Services Manager. Essential duties and responsibilities include: Planning, developing, and implementing regular Storytime sessions for specific age groups as directed Planning, developing, and implementing after-school, evening, and/or weekend programs for children as directed Assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of other library services as directed by the Public Services Manager and Library Director Assisting in collection development and the selection and promotion of materials for the children's collections as directed Providing reference and readers advisory services to patrons of all ages via email, in-person, and over the phone Preparing displays on a rotating basis Preparing bibliographies, pathfinders, and other informational materials as assigned Assisting in promoting library resources and services through social media and other platforms Assisting patrons using the library catalog, online databases, and other resources Assisting patrons with the use of public computers, printers, e-readers, and other equipment Investigating complaints Performing other duties as assigned Peripheral duties include: Making public appearances on behalf of the library, and maintaining good community relations through participation in community events Attending professional conferences and related activities Maintaining current knowledge of the public library field and child development by completing regular continuing education Education and experience: Bachelor's degree required. Master of Library Science preferred. Experience working with children required; or An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the position Necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities include: A positive outlook and enthusiastic commitment to excellent customer service Basic knowledge of public library operations, policies, and procedures Strong knowledge of reference tools and procedures Confidence in creatively using social media and other virtual platforms to articulate library mission, resources, and services Knowledge of library patrons' needs and the ability to serve those needs Ability to develop and present public information materials to promote library use Ability to communicate well orally and in writing Knowledge of current trends, standards, and emerging technologies and their application to libraries Ability to cover, develop, and present library programs for a range of ages Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, volunteers, and the public Ability to work well as part of a team, generating and sharing in the enthusiasm for the valuable work of the library Ability to use Microsoft Office software, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, and other software Work environment characteristics include: The library work environment is vibrant and busy and requires the ability to deal with multiple people and tasks simultaneously The Youth Services Librarian must be able to work a flexible schedule of 40 hours per week including evenings and weekends Physical demands include: Sitting or standing for long periods of time Climbing using step stools to access materials on high shelves Stoop, kneel, crouch, and bend Talk, hear, use hands to finger/handle/feel Reach to access materials on high or low shelves with hands Move heavy book carts Occasionally crawl and balance Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, the ability to adjust focus, and the ability to use a computer Tools and equipment used include phone system, computer, photocopier, bar code scanners, and other various equipment necessary in the effective operation of the library, including Windows operating systems, and library-related software.
