Fleet Maintenance Manager

Position Summary The Business Unit Fleet Maintenance Manager oversees up to five maintenance shops and multiple teams of technicians, supervisors, and managers supporting a fleet of up to 91 diesel and alternate‑fuel trucks, as well as machinery that serves three post‑collection facilities and three container shops. The manager directs repair and preventive maintenance, implements policies and procedures, and ensures all work complies with safety, compliance, and federal and state regulations. Principal Responsibilities Provide direction to on‑site technicians and supervisors, and to maintenance supervisors or managers, ensuring repair and maintenance work is performed safely, efficiently, and timely, reallocating resources among sites as needed. Oversee coordination, planning, and scheduling of all repair work to increase productivity while managing department overtime. Monitor shop operational performance and efficiency; take action to redirect activities appropriately. Report to management on shop performance and implement procedural changes for improvement. Conduct daily shop huddles, fleet walk‑arounds, coach and counsel lead technicians and supervisors on performance and corrective action, and participate in hiring and termination decisions with Human Resources and management. Maintain an ongoing preventive maintenance program for all shops within geographic responsibility. Identify trends in road calls and breakdowns; oversee maintenance of building and other facilities; control maintenance costs related to personnel, purchasing, inventory, and outsourcing. Perform inspections of outside repairs and maintenance to ensure compliance with company safety procedures, and follow up as appropriate. Identify training opportunities and discuss corrective action with maintenance supervisors. Accountable for scheduled quality‑control inspections, track issues and resolution. Maintain advanced knowledge of heavy‑equipment systems (engine, emissions, transmission, brake, hydraulic, electrical) to perform advanced preventive and repair maintenance on site and on the road. Manage team administrative matters: payroll, employee records, preventive and corrective maintenance records, data entry into Dossier Maintenance Software, budget preparation, and departmental goal setting. Qualifications Basic computer skills and Microsoft Office proficiency. Advanced root‑cause problem‑solving ability. Effective, professional communication skills. Strong customer service orientation. Ability to anticipate business needs, plan, and utilize equipment, employee, and fiscal resources efficiently. High analytical skill for developing multiple solution options. Organizational and collaboration skills, encouraging employee engagement. Financial management and planning skills; understanding of budgets, tables, and reports. Automotive Service Excellence T2 (Diesel Engine) and T Master certification. Certifications: T3 Drive, T4 Brake, TS Suspension and Steering; Certified Automotive Fleet Management (CAFM) Financial Systems; CAFM Risk Management; CAFM Information Management; CAFM Asset Management; CAFM Vehicle Fuel Management or similar technology experience. At least five years as a Maintenance Manager or Supervisor for a large fleet or multiple sites, with knowledge of OSHA Hazcom, Lock‑out/Tag‑out, and Fire Protection regulations. Minimum Requirements High school diploma or G.E.D. Three years of leadership experience. Pay Range $114,800.00 to $157,850.00 per year, depending on locality.
