Finance Manager - Portage, IN

SMS Mill Services, LLC is a leader in the steel mill services industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/worker' safety and handling all operations with integrity. SMS Corporate is seeking a  highly skilled, detail-oriented and results-driven Finance Manager. This role oversees finance, accounting, reporting, and compliance activities, including capex financing, cash-flow forecasting, tax compliance, financial reporting, audits, and close processes. The role ensures strong controls, accurate reporting, disciplined liquidity management, and effective support for automation, ERP, and special projects.

The Finance Manager will report to the Sr. Vice President of Finance.

SMS provides a comprehensive range of services for steel mill customers.  We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.

Key Responsibilities:
Finance

• Capital expenditure financing — Manage high-capex financing activities, including financing tranches, payment schedules, lease documentation, and related accounting to ensure accurate tracking, compliance, and full visibility over capital commitments.
• Cash flow forecasting — Build and maintain fund level cash flow models covering capital deployment, operating cash flows, debt activity, capital calls, distributions, and liquidity planning and oversee borrowing base submission. 

Accounting & Reporting

• Tax filing & compliance — Manage federal, state, and local tax filing requirements, coordinate with external tax advisors, and ensure timely compliance with all applicable tax regulations.
• Financial reporting — Oversee monthly/quarterly financials, capital account statements, and GAAP compliant reporting. Prepare consolidation and external and internal reporting packages. 
• Audit & compliance — Manage and coordinate year-end external audits, internal audits, and ad-hoc audit requests, serving as primary liaison with auditors and key stakeholders.
• Oversee audit readiness, issue resolution, and implementation of audit findings to strengthen internal controls and financial governance.
• Strengthen internal controls, governance, and process automation. 
• Act as a local finance lead on cross-functional initiatives such as automation projects and ERP enhancements.
• Manage month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing activities.
• Other analysis and special projects as needed.

Qualifications

• Strong understanding of highly leveraged balance sheets, debt structures, and loan covenant requirements, with experience monitoring covenant compliance and supporting lender reporting.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• 10+ years experience in PE ownership and Accounting
• Excellent stakeholder management and executive communication skills; able to challenge constructively
• Effective presentation skills
• Strong problem solving and analytical skills
• Intermediate to advanced excel  
• CPA certification is required

Physical / Work Conditions
Generally working within a professional office environment using electronic and other company resources as essential tools to complete required work; travel to supplier and/or internal customer locations may be required.
