Stationary Maintenance Mechanic (Boiler Mechanic, Boiler Operator)

Job Summary The High-Pressure Boiler Operator is responsible for the operation and preventive maintenance of the stationary boilers and associated mechanical equipment, ensuring a continuous supply of steam for heating hospital buildings, sterilizing equipment, humidification and reheating application. The operator performs maintenance mechanic duties as needed and follows directions from the Maintenance Supervisor or Director. Essential Job Duties Operate boilers and associated equipment safely and efficiently to generate steam, including routine startup and shutdown for maintenance and after utility interruptions. Inspect, clean, lubricate, paint and repair all mechanical equipment such as motors, fans, pumps, valves, compressors, converters, controls and boilers. Perform preventive maintenance tasks assigned through the computerized maintenance program, entering clear and detailed task results and time usage. Conduct chemical analyses or tests of condensate water, adjust dosage to maintain efficient operations, and log results. Troubleshoot, maintain and repair water treatment systems. Test flue gases and temperature for proper combustion and log results. Test and regenerate water softeners supplying all hospital areas and log results. Work scheduled and unscheduled shifts as needed to provide 24/7/365 coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Teach and instruct others on power plant and steam systems in a positive manner. Maintain boiler room in a clean, painted, well-lit, safe and secure condition, assisting other trades with cleanliness and emergency exit maintenance. Research, plan, coordinate and assist in scheduled or unscheduled outages of steam, condensate, natural gas, fuel oil and other systems. Follow all hospital and maintenance department policies, procedures and safety protocols, including LOTO and use of PPE. Climb and work from ladders, metal platforms, scaffolds, platforms and aerial lifts as required. Understand basic hospital emergency generator and chilled water systems. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Licensure/Certification: Underground Storage Tank Operator Training Class B Operator designation recognized by Virginia within 60 days of hire. Experience: Three to five years of experience as a boiler plant operator, attendant or equivalent role. Driver’s License: Yes. To drive an Augusta Health vehicle, must be 21 years old and have a Motor Vehicle Record approved by Risk Management; eligible to work in the U.S. and meet Virginia state employment requirements. Preferred Qualifications Education: None. Licensure/Certification: Boiler Room Operator or steam plant certification or equivalent. Prior experience in a hospital, healthcare system, or related service-oriented environment. Familiarity with Augusta Health’s systems, workflows, or culture. Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Work scheduled/un-scheduled shifts to maintain 24/7/365 coverage. Perform duties as a maintenance mechanic as needed. Manage time efficiently and complete work independently. Complete preventive maintenance work orders daily, entering time into computer maintenance program and filing required records. Operate fire and control boilers and associated equipment, including handling power interruptions. Shut down boiler systems for routine maintenance or emergencies. Perform routine maintenance and blow-downs of boilers. Understand boiler systems to maintain maximum efficiency by reading, adjusting and acting on gauges, indicators, controls and steam flow meters. Operate and understand boiler system controls, bypass valves and fuel oil systems. Troubleshoot, maintain and repair components of the boiler operating system. Provide optimal water treatment for boiler systems, monitoring and adjusting chemicals. Repair water treatment system components. Troubleshoot and repair steam system components (valves, traps, piping, connections, insulation). Maintain condensate system; troubleshoot, maintain and repair as required. Assist in repair and troubleshooting of system components outside the powerhouse. Teach and instruct others on boiler, condensate, fuel oil systems and bypass procedures. Maintain stock and order parts, acquiring quotes from vendors. Assist other trades (plumbing, electrical, HVAC) with steam, condensate, fuel oil systems. Work with engineering staff on troubleshooting and repairing small packaged boilers throughout campus. Assist construction trades on mechanical/utility systems related to powerhouse operation. Follow all department safety procedures, use LOTO and wear PPE. Keep work areas and equipment clean and safe, maintaining lighting, emergency exits and clearances. Maintain personal safety equipment in good working condition and readily available. Acquire, process and manage orders for stock materials or project-specific materials. Take initiative, self-manage and contribute to tasks even when not specifically assigned. Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members, reporting shifts, equipment status, and safety concerns. Punctuality and reliability at assigned work areas.
