Software Installation and Maintenance Specialist

The Software Installation and Maintenance Specialist installs, upgrades, and maintains software. They perform system software control functions and determine whether new software is needed or if existing programs can be enhanced. The specialist installs or removes software packages to include operating system office automation, and special purpose software. They load appropriate printer drivers, answer technical questions, and maintain FSS NAF operating systems and stand-alone computers to include software upgrades, data separation, equipment maintenance, database maintenance, systems backup, report generations, and equipment. The specialist documents user computer equipment and supply requirements for their procurement, performs inventory of hardware, and records the temporary and/or permanent transfer of hardware. They also perform inventory of NAF hardware, assist users in preparing computer hardware/connectivity service requests, identify hardware problems, and develop solutions for associated short and long-term effects. The specialist determines whether hardware repair with vendor support or local assets are needed, performs NAF equipment maintenance, provides guidance and assistance to NAF customers, demonstrates processes and procedures to NAF users, prepares operating procedures and recommends automated methods for better use of resources, and prepares operating instructions for NAF system equipment and computer programs including courses of action to be taken when anticipated machine errors occur, control setups, emergency shutdown procedures, and procedures for rebooting the system. They maintain, interpret, and write portions of NAF operating equipment and user manuals and instructions, perform system tests and complete appropriate worksheets and reports, monitor the operation of automated programs and respond to problems by diagnosing and correcting errors, create program scripts and macros as appropriate, implement timely changes and analyze the results for any additional actions required, coordinate the disposal of obsolete NAF inventory with proper documentation and authorization, and enforce computer and network security standards. They perform other related duties as assigned.
