Section Manager - Stormwater & Utilities

Overview Join HNTB as the Stormwater & Utilities Section Manager in our Massachusetts office. The ideal candidate will manage and develop a group of 4 to 7 drainage/stormwater and utility design engineers, provide technical expertise, and manage and deliver transportation projects for public transportation agency clients throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Conduct mentoring and leadership to promote the development of less experienced staff and improve team performance. What You'll Do Develop, monitor, and manage the section's operating budget. Manage, grow, and develop a discipline‑specific engineering section; coordinate section activities, establish priorities, and staff jobs. Ensure staff development, mentoring, and training needs are met. Collaborate with other Sections and Departments within the office on work‑sharing needs and opportunities. Support the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits. Support the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities. Support the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process, including work planning and monthly project reviews, to ensure quality and schedule compliance. Assist in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win‑to‑work activities. Maintain client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Recruit, hire, develop, and retain section staff; develop plans for reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession. Manage assigned project management activities (scope, schedule, budget, quality) and perform technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications, and plan preparation. Lead a team of at least 5—10+ employees, providing direct and indirect supervision. Perform other duties as assigned. What You'll Need Bachelor's degree in Engineering with 8 years of practical experience, including 2 years of leadership experience. What You'll Bring Experience providing technical advice, mentoring, and support for management and staff. Interaction with clients regarding projects, technical matters, and industry trends. Hiring and developing staff in the group, with an emphasis on mid and entry‑level engineers. Quality control for stormwater design and calculations for completeness and accuracy of engineering review for deliverables. Selection of software programs for project work and training staff on their use. Ability to develop concept‑level design solutions for corridors, intersections, and interchanges. Problem solving and technical guidance on complex or unusual engineering projects. What We Prefer Master's degree in Engineering. 10 years practical experience. 2 years supervisory experience. Professional Engineer (PE) certification. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification. Project Management Professional (PMP). Significant breadth and depth of technical experience in stormwater design. Experience with utility relocation design standards and practices. Proficiency delivering projects for MassDOT, MBTA, Massport, and/or RIDOT. Additional Information Benefits information: HNTB Total Rewards. Locations: Boston, MA The approximate pay range for Massachusetts is $152,341.01 - $238,276.98. The approximate nationwide pay range is $126,950.84 - $248,205.18.
