Learn more at Job Description: The Department of English & Philosophy at MCLA invites applications for Adjunct Instructors for the 2026-2027 academic year. Candidates with a commitment to working with a diverse student population are particularly encouraged to apply. For Fall of 2026, we are looking for adjunct instructor(s) to teach sections of the following course: ENGL 150: College Writing. Depending on departmental need, the successful candidate may be asked to teach either the 3-credit ENGL 150 course, or College Writing Enhanced, our co‑requisite 4-credit College Writing course for students who need extra in‑person support to succeed. College Writing emphasizes college‑level writing, reading, research and revision practices necessary for academic and civic engagement. Though individual course content can vary depending on faculty interests, by the end of their College Writing course, students will compose at least four major writing projects across a range of genres and audiences. Given that good writing develops from a recursive process involving collaboration, revision and reflection, students will be asked to complete multiple drafts of each assignment with the help of genre‑specific workshops and faculty and peer feedback. Overall, by the end of each course, students will compose 15‑20 pages of polished prose using a variety of genres to reach different audiences. Examples of Duties Deliver instruction appropriate to the topic, course description, intended learning outcomes, level, and student audience. Promote and facilitate student success by creating an environment conducive to learning and student involvement. Manage the learning environment through effective record‑keeping, submitting grades and other reports on time, and enforcing school/campus academic, code of conduct, and attendance policies. Requirements Preferred Qualifications for instructors of College Writing: M.A. or M.F.A. in English, Composition and Rhetoric, Creative Writing or a related field, or proof of excellence in teaching writing. Previous experience teaching writing. Additional Information This is a part‑time, temporary position starting on 9/1/2026 through 12/31/2026. Salary for this position is $3,500‑$7,000 per course.
