Description of Work, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Management Preferences This position is part of the Driver License Associates Program, the hiring rate for this position is $47,255. All Driver License Examiner I (DLE I) recommended candidates will be offered a hiring salary of $47,255. After successful completion of 12 months in the position, the employee will be moved to $49,618 if they have completed all the required training for a DLE, have at least a “meets expectations” on their performance review and does not have any active disciplinary actions. After successful completion of 18 months in the position, have at least a “meets expectations” on their performance review and does not have any active disciplinary actions, they will graduate from the Driver License Associates Program and become a Driver License Examiner for North Carolina with a new annual salary of $51,980. Examiner I – Driver License Position The Examiner I – Driver License position requires a strong customer‑first mindset, ensuring every transaction delivers timely, respectful, and accurate service while identifying opportunities to enhance service delivery and streamline office operations. This includes anticipating customer needs, recognizing and addressing concerns before they escape, providing clear guidance to help customers navigate the licensing process, and ensuring North Carolinians receive accurate and timely assistance. Examiner I employees will maintain compliance with all North Carolina laws and will interpret regulations as well as Division policies while collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders to maintain consistency and alignment across regions. The candidate selected for this position will maintain professionalism in all customer interactions and uphold high service standards, which is essential to improving customer satisfaction and strengthening the Division’s reputation statewide. Driver License with no suspensions or revocations within the past 10 years in any state for any motor vehicle‑related offense and no more than 5 active points. The selected candidate will be required to undergo a background check which includes a name‑based and fingerprint‑based criminal history record check. The candidate that is selected for the position will be given a conditional offer of employment that would allow him or her to begin work subject to the results of the background check. Prior to beginning employment, the selected candidate will be required to submit to a name‑based and fingerprint‑based criminal history record check. There will be a cost associated with this process for new employees. No cost is associated with this process for existing DMV employees. Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC08 $39,244 - $68,679 Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience explaining policy, procedure and/or laws to educate customers or the public. Customer service experience (friendly, enthusiastic attitude who enjoys serving customers) with a diverse clientele. Knowledge of basic computer software that includes database programs, Microsoft Office applications and the ability to quickly adapt to internal systems. Work experience typing using a computer keyboard.
