RN Neuro ICU Stepdown

Job Summary The Level 2 Registered Nurse (RN) ICU Stepdown role involves providing specialized nursing care to neurosurgical patients in a mixed-acuity unit, including an 8-bed high-acuity step-down area. The RN will perform hemodynamic and neurological monitoring, manage complex neurological conditions, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. The position requires experience in neuro checks, advanced neurosurgical care, and telemetry monitoring. The role demands strong clinical skills, critical thinking, and effective communication in a fast-paced environment. Responsibilities Perform Q1 neurological checks and monitor patients for neurological changes. Manage and care for patients with external ventricular drains (EVDs), lumbar drains, and subdural drains. Administer and monitor infusions such as 3% normal saline and Cardene drips. Monitor arterial lines and manage patients post-carotid endarterectomy, aneurysm coiling/clips, DBS insertion, and VP shunts. Provide seizure management and critical care nursing interventions. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including neurosurgeons, neurologists, and rehabilitation therapists. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient status and interventions. Respond to emergencies and provide advanced cardiac life support as needed. Participate in patient and family education regarding neurological conditions and care plans. Required Skills & Certifications Current New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license. Minimum of two years of RN experience, including telemetry and stepdown/PCU experience. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred. Experience with neurological assessments including NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Proficiency in managing neurocritical care patients with complex needs. Preferred Skills & Certifications Previous experience in high-acuity stroke and neurosurgery nursing. Experience with EPIC electronic medical records system within the last year. Additional certifications or training related to neurocritical care or stroke management. Special Considerations Must be able to work straight night shifts. On-call, holiday, and weekend availability required. Must be capable of handling high-acuity patients requiring continuous neurological and hemodynamic monitoring. Compliance with hospital policies for TB testing and other health screenings. Scheduling Straight night shift schedule. 36 to 48 hours per week depending on unit needs.
