Job Summary
The County of San Diego has current openings for Fleet Technicians to maintain and repair the County's fleet vehicles.
Interviews will take place the week of July 13th, 2026, and JOB OFFERs will be made the week of July 20th, 2026.
The starting salary for this position will be based on the candidate's qualifications at time of appointment.
Future Salary Increases

June 2026 - 10.35% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-the-Board + 7.35% Market Adjustment)

June 2027 - 10.25% increase to base pay (2.9% Across-the- Board + 7.35% Market Adjustment)
ASE Certification Premium Employees will be paid the full cost of testing, which includes any registration fees and testing for ASE Certifications upon furnishing satisfactory evidence that the employee passed the ASE Certification.
The Department of General Services (DGS) is responsible for overall management of all County vehicles, including acquisition, electrification, disposal, inventory, regulatory compliance, maintenance and fueling. The Fleet Services Division owns and operates one of the largest government vehicle fleets in the State of California consisting of over 4,500 vehicles and equipment. Fleet Services consists of Acquisitions, Electrification, Maintenance, and Contracts & Compliance. There are eight maintenance locations, seven mobile maintenance units, 30 fuel sites and 125 contracts in place for parts, service, and repairs.


Fleet Technicians perform preventive maintenance and minor repair tasks, diagnostics, inspections, smog testing, and maneuverability problems on automotive, truck, construction, and industrial equipment and to perform related work as required. Incumbents in this class may act as lead workers providing technical guidance and training to less experienced technicians performing preventive maintenance task.

Interview and Hiring Dates

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below.
  1. Job Offer and Background Process begins shortly after the interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  2. Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  3. Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of experience servicing motorized vehicular equipment, including lubrication, in a commercial, industrial, or governmental service center.
Notes:
  • Completion of appropriate course work from an accredited U.S. college or university, or certified foreign studies equivalency may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of A/C and Refrigerant licenses are highly desirable.
  • ASE certification in four (4) of the eight (8) areas for either an Automobile Technician or Medium/Heavy Truck Technician is highly desirable.
  • A valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
  • A valid California Class A or B driver's license must be obtained within twelve (12) months of appointment, and maintained throughout employment in this class, for technicians who perform public road testing on equipment requiring an A or B driver's license to operate on public roads.
  • When not required for a specific assignment, possession of a valid California Class A or B driver's license is highly desirable.

Conditions of Employment

As part of the County of San Diego's pre-employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre-employment medical screening prior to beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job-related activities of the position. Current County employees may be excluded from this process.
Evaluation

The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based upon scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment application and supplemental questionnaire.
