The Wichita Police Department has an immediate opening for one armed Security Officer with the department's Security Section. The section provides security at City Hall and the Advanced Learning Library with both locations being high paced, requiring outgoing customer service and excellent multi-tasking skills. The primary location of the city's government administration, City Hall, has the potential for high visibility due to visiting citizens from varying diverse backgrounds including dignitaries from local, state and federal governments. Security Officers must provide the appropriate level of tact and diplomacy at all times. Professionalism and courtesy are a priority for dealing with all visiting public.

The Security section is a 24 hour, 365 day operation with multiple shift schedules and varying days off, to include working holidays as required. General responsibilities of this position includes: monitoring City of Wichita facilities and infrastructure utilizing electronic monitoring equipment and computers, customer assistance in all aspects of security service, in person and by telephone answering questions of visitors seeking directions or information, screening visitors and deliveries to City Hall to ensure the safety of visitors and employees, and other related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned as needed. The employee(s) selected for this position must be able to demonstrate a strong customer service orientation, possess excellent communication skills, demonstrate computer competency which includes the ability to assist others with basic computing needs, and has a good knowledge of security methods and practices. Additionally, this position will require an extensive criminal history background check, a psychological exam and the issuance and use of a firearm within expected policies, regulations, and guidelines. This position can be assigned to either the City Hall or Advanced Learning Library locations as determined by staffing needs, The position requires flexibility which can include working all shifts, 1st, 2nd and 3rd at both the City Hall and Advanced Learning Library locations and scheduled/unscheduled overtime when necessary. Work locations and shifts will be determined at hire. Bargaining Unit: Service Employee's International (SEIU) Employees within the department or division shall be given first consideration.

Shift Days and Hours - 2nd shift position: 3:00pm - 11:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Examples of Work Performed:

• Directs visitors or clients in evacuation of premises at times of emergency.
• Deters occurrences of an illegal nature by appearing in uniform.
• Answers questions of visitors seeking directions or information.
• Performs crowd control functions as needed.
• Screens visitors and deliveries to City Hall to ensure the safety of visitors and employees.

Requirements of Work:

• Knowledge of security methods and practices
• Ability to conduct routine programming of security systems
• Ability to lawfully carry a firearm in the State of Kansas
• Ability to patrol area of responsibility quietly on foot.
• Ability to lift up to 20 pounds repeatedly up to a height of 30"

• Ability to qualify with a firearm and maintain proficiency with both hands
• Ability to complete a minimum 32 hours of self-defense and handcuffing training, and maintain proficiency.

Experience and Training:

Required Training and Experience:

• Two years of experience in security, which includes protection of individuals, securing private and/or public property, or engaging in the public interactions OR Completion of a minimum of six (6) months of service as a Police Recruit with a recognized law enforcement agency.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Training and Experience:

• One (1) year of military police or sworn law enforcement experience.
• One (1) year of experience in the handling, safe operation, and maintenance of firearms.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical which includes drug screening, a psychological evaluation, satisfactory evaluation of a criminal records check, and successful firearms qualification. Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.

CITY OF WICHITA FULL-TIME EMPLOYEE BENEFITS:

• VACATION - Most employees with less than five years employment earn 10 days of vacation per year. After five years, accrual rates increase at varying rates to varying maximums, depending on work schedule and/or union representation. Employees can accumulate and carry forward up to 240 hours each year.
• HOLIDAYS - There are eleven paid holidays. Employees also receive one Personal Holiday that is granted after the first six months of employment.
• SICK LEAVE - Sick leave accrual begins at one-half day per month. After five years, sick leave accruals are one work day per month. Employees can accumulate and carry forward all unused sick leave each year. Employees who use 24 hours (3 days) or less of sick leave in a calendar year earn a "Well Day." An additional "Well Day" can be earned following a year of perfect attendance.
• HEALTH INSURANCE – UMR / United Healthcare provides two levels of medical and prescription drug plans. Both medical plan are PPOs and do not require selecting a physician or referrals for specialty care. Both medical plans include Teladoc virtual care (primary care/mental health benefits at no charge), Dario healthy living programs, and VSP Vision benefits. Pre-tax premium deductions are offered. The City contributes 80% of the premium cost towards medical, prescription drug and vision insurance.
• DENTAL INSURANCE - Two Delta Dental plans are offered – Preferred and Traditional. The Delta Preferred plan requires using a dentist from a smaller network for a lower premium. The Delta Traditional plan allows use of any dentist, although benefits are higher using a dentist from the large Delta network. Benefits under both plans are the same (with the exception of some Orthodontic benefits) Pre-tax premium deductions are offered.
• LIFE INSURANCE – Low-cost voluntary term life insurance is available. Employees pay one-third of the cost. The amount of Basic Life coverage is two times annual pay up to a determined maximum amount. Dependent coverage is available at $20,000 spouse / $10,000 child(ren) for an additional $0.14 per pay period. Accidental death and dismemberment coverage is included. The plan is through MetLife.
• SUPPLEMENTAL LIFE – Additional voluntary employee-paid term life insurance is available from MetLife at low group rates. Participation in Basic Life is required. The Life Insurance plans are portable.
• LONG-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE– The voluntary employee-paid group disability plan from MetLife provides 60% of pre-disability income for injury or health related disabilities. Premiums are determined by income and age.
