HVAC Tech II

The HVAC Technician II is responsible for performing semi-skilledwork involving the routine installation, adjustment, operation,repair, and maintenance of building heating, ventilation, and airconditioning (HVAC) systems and refrigeration equipment. Will alsobe responsible for performing these duties on a variety ofresidential and commercial HVAC systems on and off campusfacilities. This includes operations of a central heating plantutilizing steam and/or hot water for tempering or heating building,and a central chilled water plant to provide cooling to allbuildings. As well as performing preventative maintenance,servicing, overhauling, and maintaining small package units orlarge central units and determining equipment needs. The HVACTechnician II is responsible for providing excellent customerservice to create a comfortable environment for students, faculty,and staff and perform daily tasks at all LU locations. Any otherduties as assigned. Working independently and exercising goodjudgment and discretion is essential to this job. Essential Functions and Responsibilities As Essential Personnel you are expected to be available in theevent of school closings, delays, shutdowns and any emergenciesincluding clean up required because of severe weather incidents.Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Such as shoveling,salting, etc. Maintenance personnel are essential to the overallsuccess of Liberty University and its day-to-day functions,especially during ongoing campus events such as Winter Fest,Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, and CFAW, summer camps,amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year.Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours asemergency needs arise. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties asassigned by the HVAC Tech III/ Lead and/ or HVAC Supervisor. Must be familiar with the standard concepts, practices andprocedures of the HVAC Trade. Must be able to think logically and solve problems that arisewith little guidance. Must have basic knowledge of occupational hazards andappropriate safety precautions. Knowledge of the principles of air-conditioning andair-conditioning maintenance methods. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of air compressors,pneumatic controls, electronic temperature controls, relay systems,thermostats, VAV systems, VFDs, rooftop and other air-handlingunits, including gas-fired units, chillers, energy managementsystems, pumps, 2-pipe and 4-pipe systems. Knowledge of the principles of electricity. Knowledge ofstandard parts, tools, and test equipment used in the trade andproper and safe installation of new and replacement parts. Abilityto read and interpret blueprints, ladder diagrams, wiring diagrams,schematics, and technical manuals, and the ability to implementthat knowledge in actual performance. Abilityto plan work and keepaccurate records of work performed and materials used. Ability todiagnose electrical, mechanical, and electronic defects. Ability tomaintain, adjust, and repair air-conditioning equipment. Able tosafely and properly operate, troubleshoot, repair and performpreventative maintenance on HVAC software units, as well as, waterchillers, cooling towers, and hot-water boilers. Heat pumps,refrigeration and kitchen equipment. Pumps, compressors, motors andother auxiliary equipment. Electrical, mechanical, and pneumaticcontrol systems. Assists other HVAC technicians, lead technicians and Supervisoras needed. Receives, completes and closes out work orders in theschooldude system and enter all labor and materials. Must keep accurate and up to date records of work performed andmaterials used in accordance with department standards. Provides HVAC repair services before, during, and after specialevents as emergency needs arise. This is to include duringscheduled and unscheduled work times. Must be willing to learn all locations of HVAC equipment andtheir relation to each building. Other duties as assigned. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, process,products, services and leading industry performancebenchmarks. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fosteringLU’s mission. Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Minimum of 3+years of related experience required, or an equivalent combinationof education and experience in the HVAC trade. Must have a currentEPA certification in refrigerants and a journeyman card required/preferable or must be EPA approved Refrigerant Transition andRecovery Certificate. Must have basic knowledge of computeroperation for use on our energy management system and ourpreventative maintenance and work order system (CMMS: Schooldude).Must have knowledge and understanding of the different types of airdistribution systems such as VAV, Double duct, etc. Must be able tounderstand and follow directions, and work under limitedSupervision. Must be able to work well with the public andco-workers and present a positive attitude. Clean and professionalappearance. Must be courteous, detailed oriented. Self-motivated,diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills andwell-developed communication skills. Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds and perform duties of theHVAC trade in typical Virginia Climate. This position might requirethe use of and operation of aerial lifts or be willing and able toobtain aerial lift certifications, operate, and work from variousaerial lifts and heights. Desire to work with a team to accomplishgoals. Urgency to grow and improve. Certifications obtained whileemployed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer willbe reimbursed back to the University upon voluntary termination(resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it. Must beable to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily/eveninghours. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptableDMV record, and liability insurance is required.
