Category: Advanced Practice • Job Type: Full time • Shift: Day - 10 Hour • Location: Palo Alto, CA • Req: P144391-2885 • Employee Group: Exempt • Benefits Eligible: Yes • Remote Eligible: No • Department: MG Surgery • Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 Fixed Term Position Department Duties The General Surgery NP/PA position is part of a collaborative team model of care consisting of pediatric general surgeons and advanced practice providers who provide care for patients with a wide range of pediatric surgical diagnoses. This position is located at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Palo Alto, CA. The role primarily manages pediatric surgery patients on the general surgery inpatient service. Patient Populations General surgery patients range from premature infants to young adults. Common conditions seen include emergency, acute, and chronic surgical conditions; infant and congenital surgical conditions; colorectal and intestinal conditions; tumors; and vascular lesions and vascular associated syndromes. The general surgery department also has numerous specialty outpatient programs such as the aerodigestive and airway reconstruction center, adolescent bariatric surgery, chest wall program, colorectal and bowel management program, intestinal failure and short gut program, and pilonidal disease program. Role Responsibilities Collaborate with the physician team to manage general surgery inpatients, assess new patient consults, triage calls from inpatient team members, and coordinate discharge needs. Participate in weekly education conferences, monthly APP Grand Rounds, and radiology and case conferences. Previous general surgery experience is preferred but not required. Job Summary The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) positions are part of a collaborative team consisting of Attending Physicians, Fellows, and a team of advanced practice providers (NPs and PAs). The APP team is highly respected and actively participates in the education of fellows and visiting residents. Responsibilities include receiving sign‑out from overnight team, pre‑rounding on assigned patients, developing a plan of care for the day, presenting patients on rounds, writing daily notes, implementing the agreed plan, and responding to nursing concerns. Procedures Credentialed Intubation Central line placement Arterial line placement Chest tube insertion PD drain placement Chest tube removal Pacing wire removal Essential Functions Evaluates and treats patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty, according to written standardized procedures. Obtains complete histories and performs pertinent physical examinations. Performs or requests diagnostic studies as indicated. Administers, orders, furnishes and prescribes medications. Orders and collects specimens for laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood products. Orders physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services. Performs designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable. Obtains informed consent as indicated. Initiates arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges, completing appropriate paperwork. Assists supervising physicians in the operating room; the RN First Assistant directly assists the surgeon and practices under supervision. Recognizes age‑specific needs of patients. Communicates and interacts effectively with patients, families, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds. Recognizes situations requiring immediate physician attention and initiates life‑saving procedures when necessary. Facilitates coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services as needed. Facilitates collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources. Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures. Participates in quality improvement initiatives. Provides and coordinates patient teaching and counseling. Other duties as assigned. Supervision Supervision is provided by the supervising/sponsoring physician with clinical privileges at LPCH or designated attending physicians. Standardized procedures are a mandatory mechanism of supervision. Direct on‑site, electronic or phone supervision. A physician cannot supervise more than four NP/PAs at one time. Chart screens and audits on random charts. Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) through tracking of performance indicators. Annual performance evaluation by the Lead Advanced Practice Provider, Director of Advanced Practice or supervising manager/director. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, with possession of any required licenses or certifications. Education Physician Assistant (PA): Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution; graduate of an accredited PA program. Nurse Practitioner (NP): Master's or doctoral degree in nursing; graduate of an accredited NP program. Licensure / Certification Physician Assistant: Licensed PA in California; certified by NCCPA; BLS certification; DEA license for prescribing controlled substances (if applicable); additional board certifications may be required. Nurse Practitioner: Licensed RN in California; certified NP in California; national board certification as NP; BLS certification; board furnishing license if applicable; DEA license if prescribing controlled substances to outpatients. Minimum to midpoint (Hourly): $93.75 to $114.84.
