The Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS) plays a crucial role in delivering care, including discharge planning, to individuals in the jail system. Each year, around 25% of new admissions to the NYC jail system will access mental health services. Our aim is to offer safe, holistic, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions to address a wide array of mental health challenges, ranging from severe mental illnesses to the everyday difficulties associated with incarceration. We provide some of the most innovative treatment options available nationwide, such as specialized housing units for those with serious mental health conditions, a 24-hour psychiatric service, extensive creative arts programs, a robust Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) training initiative, clinics in every facility, substance use treatment, integrated reentry services, and partnerships with various training institutions across the city.

In this full-time role, you will work under the guidance of the Medical Director of Mental Health or a supervising Psychiatrist within the Division of Correctional Health Services. Your primary responsibility will be to deliver high-quality, collaborative psychiatric care, which includes both psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic interventions for individuals incarcerated in the New York City jail system. The psychiatric service is committed to providing safe, holistic, and evidence-based therapeutic interventions for a diverse range of mental health issues. Each of the 12 facilities within the jail system has its own unique patient demographics and environmental characteristics; therefore, each Psychiatrist will be assigned to a population that aligns with their clinical expertise and preferred work location. While prior experience in correctional settings is not mandatory, the ability to collaborate effectively with various disciplines, including security personnel, is essential.

• Deliver psychiatric care, including admission evaluations, follow-ups, and urgent consultations for individuals enrolled in the mental health service.
• Consult with non-prescribing mental health and medical staff regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and the necessity for psychiatric medications.
• Engage in daily team meetings with treatment staff when working in a mental observation unit, or weekly if assigned to one of the clinics.
• Contribute to the development of individual treatment plans for patients and review existing plans regularly.
• Assess patients for the need for higher levels of care, including potential hospitalizations, and maintain communication with psychiatric staff during hospital stays to ensure continuity of care.
• Document all activities in the electronic medical record promptly and clearly.
• Provide clinical supervision as necessary for psychiatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
• Participate in weekly clinical supervision sessions with psychiatric leadership.
• Offer clinical supervision for psychiatric volunteers (residents or fellows) as needed, ensuring appropriate direct oversight and documentation of evaluations and feedback.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Senior Psychiatrist, Mental Health Manager, Medical Director, Chief of Service for Psychiatry, or their designated representatives.

This position is based on Rikers Island.

• Full-time: Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM
• Per diem: Monday, 8 AM to 4 PM

• Full-time: $113.90 per hour
• Per diem: $200.00 per hour

• Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.
• Valid New York State medical license in good standing.
• Completion of a four-year accredited psychiatric residency program in the U.S.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
• A minimum of two years of experience caring for individuals with serious mental illnesses in an institutional environment.
