Temporary Youth Mental Health and Well Being Intern

Position Information Posting Number: PG193502TM Position Number: 11ASO3040 Position Type: Temporary Location: Ellerbe, NC Essential Job Duties The purpose of this internship is to increase awareness and access to mental health and healthy relationship resources among youth aged 8 to 14 who attend Millstone camp and among camp staff and counselors. The intern, in collaboration with a faculty member of the NCSU Department of Agricultural Human Sciences, will design a week-long program that includes brief group interactions with campers on mental health and healthy relationships. The intern will also work directly with youth experiencing behavioral distress or requiring mental health assistance, and facilitate conflict resolution sessions with pairs or groups of campers. During the internship the intern will collaborate with the camp program director to build staff capacity to recognize and support low‑intensity mental health needs. The internship will span 4 weeks of off‑camp program preparation and planning at NCSU (remote/hybrid), 6 weeks on‑site at Millstone camp working with staff and campers, and 2 weeks reviewing program evaluation data and preparing a brief program report. During on‑camp weeks the intern, along with other staff, will respond after hours to youth as needs arise. Graduate students in clinical mental health programs may receive secondment supervision for individual and relational work hours through the internship. The program may be offered a second summer. The internship includes a $5,000 stipend, a $900 travel stipend, and room and board for the duration of the stay at Millstone Camp. Internship Sites Millstone 4H‑Camp offers youth a six‑day residential camp experience with activities such as canoeing, kayaking, crafts, swimming, hiking, field games, rope courses, and shooting sports (archery, riflery, shotguns) in addition to meals and caring staff. The Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences is multidisciplinary, addressing critical research questions related to nurturing strong, healthy, productive families and communities. Work Schedule Off‑camp weeks (6): 9‑5 flex schedule. On‑camp weeks: daytime duties plus after‑hours response as needed. Requirements and Preferences Minimum: Bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a Master’s or Doctoral Program in a Clinical Mental Health discipline. Possess basic clinical counseling/therapy skills to administer mental health first aid, conflict resolution, and address relationship health, dating, depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Foundational knowledge of brief mental health education and relationship education programs. Ability to gather and consolidate research to support program planning for adolescent mental and relationship health. Eligible for licensure or working toward accruing clinical hours for eligibility for licensure. Benefits $5,000 stipend, $900 travel stipend, and room and board at Millstone Camp.
