LECTURER – MUSIC(Voice Performance, Church Music, or Music Production/Composition)(Non -Tenure Track)Morris Brown College · Atlanta, Georgia OVERVIEWMorris Brown College invites applications for a part-time, non-tenure-track Lecturer position in the Department of Music. The successful candidate will report to the Department Chair and support the mission of Academic Affairs by providing high-quality instruction in one or more of the following areas:Voice PerformanceChurch MusicMusic Production/CompositionThe Lecturer will teach primarily face-to-face courses, with occasional synchronous instruction as assigned. This position carries a teaching load of five (5) courses each semester, provides academic advising for assigned students, and includes departmental, institutional, and professional service responsibilities that support the mission and strategic goals of Morris Brown College. JOB DUTIESJob duties include, but are not limited to, the following requirements as defined by TRACS accreditation standards, the board-approved Faculty Handbook, administrative policies, and state requirements established by the Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission (GNPEC).Faculty members are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, scholarship, advising, and service.Teaching EffectivenessPossess thorough and accurate knowledge of the assigned music discipline and demonstrate the ability to evaluate and apply current pedagogical practicesTeach primarily in-person undergraduate music courses in Voice Performance, Church Music, Music Production/Composition, Music Theory, Music Fundamentals, Music History, Aural Skills, Applied Music, Ensembles, or other courses as assignedPlan, organize, and deliver engaging instruction that promotes student learning and artistic developmentDevelop instructional materials, assignments, assessments, and learning activities that strengthen musicianship, creativity, communication skills, critical thinking, and professional preparationIncorporate appropriate instructional technologies, recording software, music notation software, digital audio workstations (DAWs), learning management systems, and other educational technologies when applicableUtilize a variety of instructional strategies and assessment methods that facilitate student mastery of course competenciesProvide timely, constructive, encouraging, and corrective feedback that promotes student successEvaluate student learning through authentic performance assessments, written assignments, projects, juries, recitals, portfolios, examinations, and classroom participationContinuously evaluate instructional effectiveness and modify teaching strategies to meet diverse student learning needsContent ExpertiseDemonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the assigned music discipline, including current scholarship, performance practices, music technology, composition techniques, recording methods, worship traditions, and contemporary industry standards, as appropriateMaintain professional engagement through scholarship, creative activity, performances, composition, recording projects, conferences, workshops, or professional organizationsRemain current in the discipline through continuing education and professional developmentMaintain faculty credentials in accordance with Morris Brown College and TRACS accreditation requirementsDemonstrate effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skillsAcademic AdvisingServe as an academic advisor for assigned music majorsAssist students with degree planning, registration, academic progress, and graduation requirementsMonitor student success and academic standing while providing appropriate referrals to campus resources when neededMentor students regarding graduate study, careers in music, internships, performances, auditions, licensure (when applicable), and professional development opportunitiesMaintain accurate advising records in accordance with institutional policiesProfessional ResponsibilitiesProvide timely, substantive feedback to studentsMeet scheduled classes and rehearsals; notify the Department Chair, Assistant Provost, or Provost in advance of any absence and arrange appropriate instructional coverage when possibleMaintain regular office hours and remain accessible to students through email, telephone, and scheduled appointmentsPrepare and distribute syllabi in accordance with departmental and institutional guidelinesFollow the published academic calendar, rehearsal schedule, jury schedule, recital schedule, and final examination scheduleMaintain accurate records of attendance, grades, advising notes, and academic progressSubmit grades, attendance reports, assessment data, and other institutional reports by established deadlinesRespect the confidentiality of student educational records in accordance with FERPA and institutional policyEvaluate students solely on academic and artistic performance while responding promptly to grade inquiries and appealsParticipate in departmental meetings, faculty meetings, commencement exercises, recruitment events, auditions, juries, recitals, concerts, accreditation activities, assessment initiatives, and institutional committeesAssist with recruitment, retention, and community engagement activities that support the Department of MusicPerform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSThe Lecturer must meet the following minimum qualifications:Master 's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline from an accredited institution is requiredMaster of Music [Education, Performance, or Technology], Master of Music Education (Voice or Instrumental), or Master of Arts in Church Music (Voice/Instrumental)Doctorate degree preferredAn equivalent combination of education and related teaching experience may be consideredPreferred QualificationsEarned Doctorate (DMA, Ph.D., Ed.D., D.M., or equivalent) in the Music teaching disciplinePrevious teaching experience at an accredited institution of higher educationProfessional performance, recording, composition, conducting, worship leadership, or music industry experience appropriate to the specializationExperience with accreditation assessment, curriculum development, and student advising SPECIALIZATION AREASVoice PerformanceFaculty assigned to Voice Performance may also:Teach Applied Voice, Vocal Literature, Vocal Pedagogy, Opera Workshop, Diction, and Musical Theater-related coursesPrepare students for juries, recitals, auditions, competitions, and graduate studyCoach solo vocal repertoire from various historical periods and stylistic traditionsAssist with departmental performances, recitals, and vocal ensemble activitiesChurch MusicFaculty assigned to Church Music may also:Teach Hymnology, Church Music History, Worship Leadership, Choral Conducting, Organ Literature, Sacred Music, and related coursesPrepare students for careers in church music, worship leadership, and sacred music ministrySupport choral ensembles and sacred music performancesMaintain familiarity with traditional, gospel, Anglican, liturgical, and contemporary worship practicesMusic Production/CompositionFaculty assigned to Music Production/Composition may also:Teach Music Production, Songwriting, Composition, Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), Recording Techniques, Music Technology, MIDI, Mixing, Mastering, and related coursesSupervise student recording sessions and production projectsUtilize industry-standard music production software and recording technologiesAssist students with internships, portfolio development, entrepreneurship, and career preparation within the music industry SERVICE EXCELLENCEWork collaboratively with faculty, administrators, staff, and students to advance the mission of Morris Brown CollegeFoster a student-centered learning environment characterized by academic excellence, accessibility, professionalism, inclusion, and student successSupport recruitment, retention, assessment, accreditation, and continuous improvement initiatives within the Department of MusicContribute to the artistic, academic, and cultural life of the College through performances, concerts, recitals, community engagement, and institutional serviceMorris Brown College is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values diversity, inclusion, academic excellence, and student success.
