Job Overview:  The Assistant Controller at Park Square Homes plays a critical leadership role within the Finance department, serving as the primary accounting resource between the Controller and the accounting team. This role carries meaningful responsibility — not just executing accounting tasks, but owning the integrity of the general ledger, overseeing financial close, reviewing the work of the accounting team, and partnering directly with the Controller on reporting, compliance, and operational financial support. Unlike a Senior Accountant role focused primarily on execution, the Assistant Controller is expected to function at a supervisory and analytical level: reviewing rather than only preparing, leading close rather than only participating, and bringing a strategic awareness of the full financial picture at Park Square Homes. The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader with deep construction or homebuilding accounting experience, strong GAAP knowledge, and the operational fluency to connect financial data to what is actually happening in the field.  

Key Responsibilities:  

Financial Reporting & Close Leadership

• Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process — coordinating the accounting team, ensuring all journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations are completed accurately and on schedule.
• Prepare, review, and present monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP, with variance analysis and commentary that gives leadership a clear and accurate view of financial performance.
• Review journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations prepared by the accounting team, providing feedback, corrections, and quality oversight before finalization.
• Perform detailed financial analysis on revenue, margins, direct costs, and profitability by job, community, and division — identifying trends, risks, and opportunities for leadership consideration.
• Maintain and reconcile key balance sheet accounts including inventory, land held for sale, deposits, legal fees, title credit refunds, and intercompany transactions.
• Reconcile bond and LOC trackers, and assist with external audit preparation, lender reporting requirements, and tax compliance documentation.
• Prepare internal management reports to support decision-makers across Construction, Land, Finance, and executive leadership.

Job Cost Management & Construction Accounting

• Own accurate job cost tracking, coding, and reporting across all active homebuilding projects — ensuring costs are captured correctly, budgets are monitored, and variances are identified and explained promptly.
• Monitor construction budgets vs. actuals at the community and job level, identifying cost overruns, billing delays, or coding discrepancies before they compound.
• Review and reconcile Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP and company policy.
• Partner with construction managers, purchasing, and project teams to ensure proper cost allocation, purchase order compliance, and subcontractor billing accuracy.
• Provide financial support to operations by analyzing direct construction costs, reviewing subcontractor payments, and supporting field teams in understanding job cost data.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Planning

• Assist the Controller in developing and maintaining annual budgets across divisions — construction, land development, and corporate — collaborating with department heads and project managers to consolidate inputs and ensure accuracy.
• Prepare rolling forecasts and short-term cash flow projections to support strategic planning and operational decision-making.
• Analyze budget-to-actual variances and deliver insight on cost drivers, overruns, and efficiency opportunities in a format leadership can act on.

Land, Development & Treasury Support

• Track land acquisition costs, development expenses, and associated soft costs, ensuring proper capitalization and timely allocation for purchases, sales, takedowns, and platting.
• Support the calculation of Relative Sales Value (RSV basis) for land and community projects.
• Support the Finance Manager with ledger detail and reports needed for pro forma analysis and feasibility studies for new land deals.
• Maintain schedules for land inventory, lot takedowns, and associated financing arrangements.
• Initiate wire requests, monitor positive pay exceptions and check fraud matters, and support the Controller with monitoring daily cash balances, upcoming disbursements, and cash needs.

Team Oversight, Process Improvement & Systems

• Provide day-to-day oversight and review of accounting team work product — including the work of staff-level accountants — ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to GAAP and internal control standards.
• Identify and implement opportunities to streamline accounting workflows, improve reporting accuracy, and increase efficiency across the close and operational accounting processes.
• Support the optimization of construction accounting systems including Sage 300 Timberline and Prism, and assist with data integration between field management and financial systems.
• Help develop and maintain internal controls and standard operating procedures related to accounting and finance.
• Train and support accounting staff and cross-functional operations teams on financial best practices, job cost tracking, system usage, and reporting tools.
• Participate in cross-functional initiatives to improve purchasing controls, budgeting tools, and financial reporting capabilities.

Qualifications:  

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
• Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in residential homebuilding, construction, or real estate development required.
• Demonstrated experience operating at an Assistant Controller, Senior Accountant, or equivalent level with supervisory or review responsibility over other accounting staff.
• CPA designation or active progress toward CPA strongly preferred; public accounting background a meaningful plus.
• Strong, working knowledge of GAAP and construction-specific accounting principles including job costing, WIP schedules, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
• Proficiency with construction accounting software required; experience with Sage 300 Timberline or similar construction ERP systems strongly preferred.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel required, including pivot tables, financial modeling, and large-dataset analysis.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet close deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

• Accuracy and integrity under pressure — maintains an uncompromising standard of accuracy across the general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations, and financial reporting, even during peak close periods or periods of high organizational activity.
• Process improvement orientation — consistently looks for opportunities to make the accounting function faster, more accurate, and more scalable, bringing practical recommendations and the initiative to implement them.
• Effective communication across levels — can translate complex financial data into clear, actionable insight for non-finance stakeholders, and communicate accounting issues and decisions with precision to the Controller and leadership.

Physical Requirements:  

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer for financial reporting, reconciliation, and close management responsibilities.
• Frequent use of a computer, keyboard, and standard office equipment with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail required.
• Occasional movement throughout the office to collaborate with the accounting team, construction management, and cross-functional departments.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds as needed.
• Must maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance to support monthly close cycles, lender reporting deadlines, and audit commitments.
