Delicatessen Clerk

Job Title: Delicatessen Clerk Department: Delicatessen FLSA: Non‑Exempt Primary Duties and Responsibilities Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by caring, showing concern, and practicing patience in all customer interactions. Smiles and greets customers, and addresses them by name whenever possible. Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing items that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, and recording and forwarding customer suggestions or requests. Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to callers, including taking customer orders. Take customer orders at the delicatessen counter and review orders for the day. Work with co‑workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment. Understand and practice proper sanitation procedures and maintain a clean and neat work area. Review the status and appearance of food for freshness, ensuring an adequate supply is ready and on hand. Prepare, finish, and replenish products as necessary, and check in and put product away, reviewing invoices when required. Run department registers, receive payment, and make change where applicable. Remove trash in a timely manner. Maintain strict adherence to department and company guidelines regarding personal hygiene and dress, as well as company policies and store guidelines. Report to work on time and when scheduled. Secondary Duties and Responsibilities Wash dishes as necessary. Order product and supplies as required. Deliver orders as needed. Price products for customers as necessary. Assist in other areas of store as needed. Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions, write identifying information, and request supplies orally or in writing. Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages. Education and Experience Less than high school or equivalent experience and six months or less of similar or related work experience. Physical Requirements Perform medium work: exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Visual requirements: clarity of vision at a distance of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet, with or without correction, color vision, depth perception, and field of vision. Perform activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Working Conditions Exposed to dust, noise, equipment movement hazards, electrical shock, temperature extremes, and cleaning chemicals or solvents. Fast‑paced work environment. Equipment Used Telephone, fax, copier, intercom system, computer, calculator, kitchen utensils, hot wrapping machine, garbage disposal, trash compactor, cardboard compactor, box cutter, slicer, scales, delivery van, pallet jack, hot wrapper, and knives. Contacts Daily contact with the general public and customers. Contact with federal or state governmental or regulatory agencies regarding inspections.
