Program Director
$108k - $110kExpandED Schools
ExpandED is dedicated to ensuring that all young people have access to enriching learning opportunities that affirm their identities, teach them valuable skills, and spark new possibilities. Through program development, capacity-building, research and advocacy, we work toward our vision of a vibrant and stable publicly-funded system of school-community partnership so that all New York City children thrive. Established in 1998, the organization today reaches more than 119,000 children and 900 programs throughout New York City to ensure that students in under-served communities have access to innovative, engaging ways of learning to enable them to reach their full potential. Over the last two decades, ExpandED Schools’ program, research and policy efforts have led to increased recognition of the academic, social, and emotional benefits of afterschool, increased funding, and new models for school-community partnership. In the fall of 2022, ExpandED Schools launched a dual-impact initiative to scale access to high impact tutoring citywide. This initiative, in partnership with New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and other state and local agencies, aims to coordinate efforts to ensure high impact tutoring services reach all students who would benefit from them while also building capacity of the district, tutoring providers, and community-based organizations to deliver high impact tutoring. Initial implementation focused on reaching 15,000 early elementary and middle school students in ten selected school districts by 2025, as well as coalition-level support to reach additional students, schools and tutor partners throughout the city, and we were successful. We now focus on sustaining effective high-impact tutoring practices throughout the city. The initiative also provides support and resources to aspiring educators in an effort to recruit the next generation of diverse and talented New York City public school educators. Duties & Responsibilities Reporting to the Vice President, High-Impact Tutoring, the Director, Tutoring Implementation will lead a team of Program Managers who provide individualized coaching and technical assistance to schools, districts and tutor providers participating in our high-impact tutoring initiative. The Director will: Develop systems and materials to support continuous improvement, effective program management, and partnering. Supervise and build capacity of a team of five Program Managers around a range of topics, including observation and coaching, project management, continuous improvement, and cultivating strong relationships. Participate actively in solving problems on a collaborative team dedicated to improving citywide high-impact tutoring. Develop, implement and refine rubrics to assess implementation quality and support staff to create tailored improvement plans. Participate in site visits, support Program Managers; assess implementation of high-impact tutoring; and identify effective practices and common challenges across the initiative. Design and implement systems to connect school and CBO leaders with one another to foster a community of practice that supports learning and continuous improvement. Partner with the ExpandED research team to ensure that Program Managers are supporting effective data collection systems by schools, districts, and tutoring providers. Serve as the point person and check in regularly with tutoring providers to identify and provide technical assistance to address challenges they are facing. Develop and/or maintain expertise on the emerging research about high-impact tutoring, in order to inform initiative design and guidance for school and district leaders. Develop and maintain program files and calendars of site visits and other key events within the Program Manager team. Prepare and deliver progress reports as-needed for ExpandED leaders, board members, funders, and DOE central and district leaders, orally and in writing. Collaborate with colleagues on special projects and perform other work as assigned. Desired Qualifications Deep commitment to ExpandED Schools’ vision of an equitable public education system that prepares young people for long-term success. Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of related experience with progressive growth Strong cultural competence with respect for and knowledge of the cultures of stakeholders we work with and communities we serve. Creative thinking, strong interpersonal skills, the desire to work collaboratively, and a sense of humor. Competent computer skills, including knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Willingness and ability to travel within New York City frequently and occasional overnight trips. Our organization follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed. All staff must spend 5 days in the office per month as determined by their team schedule. Additionally, leaders of teams may call team members together for in-person meetings in the office when they reasonably believe that the work will be more productive and/or efficient if completed through in-person collaboration, and all full-time employees are expected to attend monthly all-staff meetings at the office. Finally, this position requires regular use of public transportation and some work in school buildings that may require climbing stairs.
