Full Time, 80% (Temporary) Cambridge, MA, US – October 2026 to January 2027 Summary Buckingham Browne & Nichols School is seeking a part-time (80%) dynamic, student-centered Upper School English teacher to cover a leave of absence from October 2026 to January 2027. The English teacher will teach two sections of English 9, one section of an AP English Literature elective, and two trimester-long English 12 electives. We are seeking a knowledgeable English teacher who values student voice and agency, utilizes a variety of pedagogical approaches, can work independently, and is excited to work as part of a team in curriculum development. Key Responsibilities Plans and develops an engaging, age-appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices and curriculum guidelines. Prepares materials for lessons, assignments, and tests; evaluates, corrects, and grades student performance. Supervises the behavior of students in the classroom, school grounds, and educational trips and discusses academic difficulties or behavioral problems with students as they arise. Communicates progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as appropriate, other faculty, staff, and/or campus Director. Builds and maintains positive relationships with parents, students, and colleagues. Enforces safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors. Maintains required paperwork for individual student files, attendance and incident reports, and other necessary records. Monitors halls, study periods, and lunchrooms with other faculty and staff. Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars. Maintains knowledge of research, developments, and best practices. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Hold an undergraduate degree in literature or a related field. An advanced degree in literature, education, or a similar field is preferred. Create a dynamic and engaging classroom experience for students. Offer a wide range of opportunities for learning in the classroom (small group work, full‑class discussion, debates, presentations, etc.). Demonstrate agility in adjusting teaching approaches to best support the critical thinking, writing, and creativity of all students. Build students’ confidence in their independent ability to read, write, and think critically and creatively. Work effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff. Seek collaboration with a team of colleagues within the English Department and with teachers in other disciplines. Value advancing students’ knowledge and affirmation of themselves and others. Salary $69,500.00 – $115,754.00 (prorated for leave time).
