Lawyer — Regulatory & Market Entry — Full-Time, Remote (San Francisco)

Vandil is an Australian-headquartered AI-native law firm expanding into the United States. We're looking for a California-admitted lawyer to help us establish and grow our legal presence in the state — someone who can navigate the regulatory, structural, and operational requirements of setting up a law practice in California while also serving clients in AI and privacy law.

This is a foundational role. You'll be instrumental in shaping how Vandil operates in the US market, working closely with our founder and Australian-based team to ensure we meet all State Bar, entity formation, and regulatory compliance obligations. Once established, you'll transition into a client-facing role delivering AI and data privacy legal services through our Lawyer-In-The-Loop model, where AI handles routine work and you provide the expert review, judgment, and client relationship that technology can't replace.

What you'll do

In the first six months, your focus will be on market entry: advising on and executing the registration, licensing, and structural requirements for Vandil to lawfully practise in California. This includes navigating State Bar of California rules on law firm ownership and structure (including any restrictions relevant to foreign-owned or technology-driven firms), advising on entity formation options (e.g. LLP, PC, or other permissible structures), ensuring compliance with Rules of Professional Conduct as they apply to AI-augmented legal delivery, coordinating with local counsel or regulatory bodies as needed, and helping build out the operational and compliance infrastructure for our US office.

Once the US practice is operational, you'll shift toward client-facing work — advising mid‑market technology companies on AI governance, data privacy compliance (CCPA/CPRA, emerging state and federal AI regulation), terms of service, and incident response. You'll work within our Vandil Intelligence Platform, reviewing and refining AI‑drafted legal work, and helping shape the workflows that make our delivery model possible.

More about you

You're admitted to practise law in California (active membership with the State Bar of California is required). You have 3–7 years of post‑qualification experience, ideally with exposure to law firm operations, regulatory compliance, or legal market entry. Experience with any of the following is highly valued: State Bar registration and compliance requirements for new law firms or foreign legal entities, California entity formation for professional services firms, Rules of Professional Conduct (particularly as they intersect with technology and AI), and data privacy or AI regulation (CCPA/CPRA, NIST AI RMF, or similar frameworks).

You're comfortable working in a startup environment where the playbook doesn't exist yet. You're organised, self‑directed, and capable of managing regulatory workstreams with minimal supervision. You communicate clearly and directly, and you're the kind of lawyer who sees the commercial objective behind every compliance requirement.

You're excited about AI — not threatened by it. You see AI‑augmented legal delivery as the future of the profession and want to help build it, not just advise on it. Experience working with AI tools in a professional context is a plus, but curiosity and willingness to learn matter more.
